Fendt transmission rebuild cost 25k

That is useful to know if true.

To be honest vario tractors are now so common place you would think manufacturers would make it easy to remove the vario part of the box and offer a remanufactured or service exchange service.
Don't go buying one without checking! A rep said it was quick and easy to change the unit when needed and I joked that if they made it properly it wouldn't need to be.

There was a Profi article years ago where 2 fitters did it in a night, if I remember correctly the tractor had been on silage and had issues so it was parked up after shift and ready to go again the next morning.
Well remembered, it was this article from the 5/2018 issue.

It's not true!!!!

Valtra Vario is made up of the same sectional castings from the bell housing back to the differential that forms their fixed ratio transmissions. A hydrostat and two speed powershift replaces the 5 speed powershift unit of the "conventional" fixed ratio transmissions. The hydro is connected to a forward/reverse drive clutch unit, which then drives a 4 speed conventional synchro ring gearbox which requires a full disengagement of drive to change ratio. The hydro allows it to go from zero to max speed in each range, so for transport work for example, you can go from 0 to 30mph without a declutch, though in practice it will start off in C range and automatically change to D on the move.

Long story short, any work required on a valtra transmission is a cab off and split the tractor job, with the associated labour bill

However, the reliability is theoretically better than other designs because the majority of the internals are common to both hydro and fixed ratio transmissions, and the hydro unit (driven correctly) is subjected to far less torque variations compared to epicyclic designs, so doesn't need replaced with the same regularity.

Ive been in a workshop having a solenoid change on a fendt 718 and went for a walk round. Pretty sure I saw a bloke working on a 500 series vario. Cab was either on blocks or chained to the overhead crane and the rear axle rolled out from underneath it to get to the box.
