Food shortages being kept quiet?

Well that's the thing. If there's a rough winter, maybe another storm Desmond situation, or all the power goes out because the country ran out of gas, a bottle of UHT in the cupboard means your cup of tea or coffee is only a little iffy, rather than downright miserable if you are someone who always has it white. A lot of low-end food service relies on UHT for the beverages. I imagine it is a lot more popular in the really remote regions of the world than in the UK where its rarely more than 5 or 10 minutes to the Co-Op which *always* has milk....

No matter how bad the UHT is.... it still has to win out over whatever muck the vegans are calling milk these days. :D
I am sure I heard that UHT was popular in the Birmingham region, no idea why.

We arrived here in France on the 1st of September 2019, I therefore am no expert on the goings on here, however, one thing I have noticed is that they are very good at looking after one another. It strikes me that whilst a lot of money was spent on that road I would guess that most of it filtered down into the local communities one way or another. They seem to be quite adept at finding ways to support or subside communities indirectly. Whilst you may not think it fair I have to say from our side of the water it is refreshing to live somewhere that appears to look after it’s citizens.

There are many who become expats and move to France.

Most return...............

From Tuesday, British and Channel Islands fishing boats will not be allowed to offload their catch at French ports.
But that is the least of it. Only 5% of UK seafood exports to France arrive in this way. The rest comes by freight.
Potentially far more disruptive will be intensified controls at Calais and other entry points for UK trade by ferry and tunnel.
The French authorities will be conducting what they call a "grève de zèle" - in other words becoming suddenly punctilious, thorough and on the look out for infractions.

And it is not just fish imports which will be checked, but everything

Indeed, however I am not sure what that has to do with the building of an expensive road or more on topic, food shortages?

It was simply pointing out that the eutopian environment you think you may have moved to, perhaps doesn't turn out that way.

But, look on the bright side, plenty of cheap booze and fags on the return journey !

In fact, why not fill a van, and when you get back to Blighty, dump em all in the sea, just to make a point about cheap imports, and in support of your community.

It’s what leavers voted for, is it not ?
After all they had done their homework by means of impact assessments and all would be rosy…

Go for it!
Was talking to someone over to their holiday home, he described the UK as "plagued and impoverished." They've decided to come back again for Christmas as "it'll be crap at home"!

Seems that many didn’t realise that back in June 2016 …

The very idea that the UK’s influence in the corridors of Brussels would remain once we told them to “F” off show a level of naivety from voters worthy of a kindergarten.

If it's of any interest, I voted to remain, however after witnessing the shambolic performance of the EU over Covid vaccines, I'm pleased we left.

Poland is the next problem for the EU, they are currently being fined 1.0m a week for wanting to have their own laws.

At that rate, if they saved the money, they could build a road like the one on Reunion Island in 44 years time !!

stopped buying french cars years ago due to rust/reliability problems. i don't drink much wine but there are good offering from the new world/antipodies. my late brother in law used to do a lot of legal work for his firm with total oil. he said everything was good as long as the french got their own way.
