Ford 4000 Help

Our old tractor refused to start back in the autumn, and has been parked up since, but now spring is n the air someone has suggested harrowing, so its in the workshop.

Cranks fairly well, but not a wisp of smoke, so Ive taken the cover off the injector pump to make sure that its not the stop control, which its not.

Cranking with one pipe off, (pump body is full ) just the slightest fluctuation but no spill/squirt even with the governor held open.

The question is, what next.

1. Swap out pump,
2. Have a look in pump
3. Any other suggestions welcome

pencil filter in tank blocked, have you put a new fuel filter on, on my old digger it was gravity fed with no lift pump so took a long time to get rid of air.

Build up pressure with the lift pump primer, open a bleed valve and see the fuel squirt half way to the neighbouring farm.
Now you've got transfer pressure. Injection pressure now done by engine rotation and smoke should be seen.
Awe s**t! I'm assuming it's a CAV type pump or is it an in-line?

Never seen a lift pump on a 4000. Are you getting a good flow from the lower bleed screw on the pump when cranking?
The delivery valve may be stuck in the inlet end of the pump and/or the gauze blocked. Take the inlet pipe off, then the big nut(15/16" spanner) and lift out the thick spring. The gauze sits around the inside of the hole. Needs fishing out very carefully with a fine hook so as not to lift out the valve body which contains a small top hat shaped plug, sometimes followed by another small spring and then a piston. The plug can be lifted out with pointed pliers and then you can insert a very thin screwdriver and see if the piston can be pushed down and feel if comes back up again as there is another very fine spring in the bottom of the hole. Everything must go back in again in the right order including the plug that has to be the right way up.

On a 4000 where there’s not a lot of room if you’re going to remove the pencil filter I always whip the pipe off and remove the 4 5/16 head bolts holding the end plate onto pump. It’s much easier then to remove the filter and re arrange everything back in order plus you can check the vanes.

Have you tried tapping the pump when cranking? Sometimes delivery valve can stick, especially if a drop of water is in the fuel and a tap sometimes will release it but if it’s been standing with even a hint of water in fuel then it will be a pump strip down job.

Drain fuel tank take off pipe and remove tap there is or should be a filter on it can almost guarantee it will be blocked, blow it out, chuck some fuel in tank and wash crap out and blow out with air, use thread sealer when refitting tap, with pipe off the pump end fuel should flow out under gravity............

Thanks for the above everyone, I did dip the tank first because Ive made that sort of mistake a time or two {embarrassed emoji }. It is the CAV, radial type pump, no lift pump, will get at it in the morning( I have heard about tapping it, but never appreciated what that was about) and lift out the gauze, there is fuel coming through, but considering we are cranking with the top cover off the pump, not flowing out, more of a dribble.

Remove the pipe on the left side of the picture, then remove the large nut as there should be a filter in there take it out and clean it................................................................................................

You will never get it injecting with the top off really as you’re not filling it up but with the top off fuel should be running through. You need the top back on, bleed it to the bottom screw first then to the bleed screw in the too of the pump. If it’s not running through then start from tap under tank, open union, if it flows, tighten back up and move on to filter inlet and so on and on

Update from nearly a whole day in the workshop. I think the culprit was a lump of grey snot above the delivery piston. No idea how that would manage to get there past the gauze. Secondry problem that the fibre washer had turned into Potty Putty (anyone remember that) so I set about making a new one, eventually successfully. All back together and she fired up fairly willing. 7.1mm of rain so harrowing is off for the moment, so time to sort out the handbrake ratchet. IMG_5376.JPG
