Free Trade Beef

Very interesting @TelesnaAg - thanks.

Of topic, I know, but I would find it interesting if we could have a sticky thread on here that could regularly update beef, lamb and pig prices across the world (eg Austrailia, NZ, Ireland, USA, etc) in some sort of easy to read tabular form. Whenever I've tried to look up prices on line, I've never had much success - always seem to get out of date info.
@Sleepy @llamedos would this create too much work?
Would there be enough interest from the Beef, lamb and pig price tracker regulars? @Northeastfarmer ,@gone up the hill ,@sherg ,@Old Tip , @Lovegoodstock ,@Henarar ,etc, etc Comments appreciated.

Great idea!

Depends on location of course...some cart 1500km in the nth...but they have very low costs...they just round up cattle once a year and take whats there...thats it...

Where i am about 100km max distance...i have 4 cattle and 1 sheep market all within 90km...if i go 300km theres heaps of markets and it not unfeasable to do so...

And 100km travel here alot different to uk...they use bigger trucks and fuel is half the price of uk...

Thanks

Im not sure I would be in agreement that there are less challenges in the likes of Australia than there is in the UK. Things like drought and the sheer vastness of the country will pose problems that us Brits will struggle to comprehend.

I spoke to a vet from the Oz Department of Agriculture who suggested that some states have cattle compulsory RFID rules that are ahead of those on the UK.

There prices aren't actually much lower than our's but they have much cheaper production methods as they can use growth promoters and they don't have all this farm assurance BS..

If they do get tariff free access to our market ( which is unlikely ) then we will HAVE to be allowed to use growth promoters and this farm assurance rubbish will have to be thrown in the hedge! if not then we will be on a very un level playing field.
How would the eating quality compare ?

Don't assume that Americans use growth promoters. I saw a presentation by the Wolf cattle company who produce 60,000 cattle per year WITHOUT growth promoters and with traceable antibiotic use in a fully integrated system. Even to the point that they bred their own bulls to use on their own dairy farms. This is just one company.

We don't even put the sire on the passport.

Hgps almost gone....thats so 90's...like madonna...

Remember australia has cattle grown in very remote to uk style conditions...

Trucks are usually on 12-14 hour days limits...2 up and it rolls non stop...

Not having to house cattle in winter etc...is a massive saving...ive travelled alot and oz would be a hard place to beat dollar wise for raising cattle...its drought in the remote areas that stuffs the job...not an issue in my neck of the woods...

Its been pouring here all day...and its warm....i better get some clover sown...

It makes no sense at all for any country to import anything that it has a perfectly adequate supply of at home - that's just basic economics. The problem comes when smart @rsed governments/politicians want to do trade deals with other countries..........."Oh we'll have your bacon if you have some of our cars/pharmaceuticals/oil/widgets/or whatever.
Crazy.
