Jupé but he didn't quite beet Fillon. I wonder if he had beaten Fillon (before fillongate) if he would now be president? IMO certainly yes
Another corrupt politician
Was banned from holding office for 10 years in 2004;

Former French prime minister Alain Juppe was today found guilty of corruption and barred from holding public office for a decade, a decision that is almost certain to end his presidential ambitions.

Mr Juppe, 58, the head of France's centre-right UMP party and the current mayor of Bordeaux, was found guilty after a scandal which saw Paris city funds used to pay political allies in the late 80s and early 90s.

Yes but that was a lot of years ago and he was forgiven.
He was the favorite of most I knew last autumn. Crikey, even in the middle of fillongate, they got 20% two weeks back, a forgiven jupé would of had every chance

All politicians appear to have their hands in the till, looks like it goes with the Job. Remember how indigent at being questioned some of our MP's where when they were caught out in the expenses scandal. Is/was this the only honest President in the world?

I recently had to listen to 2 people arguing the merits of Socialism and Capitalism , the quote of "you can tell a politician is lying 'cos their lips are moving" was a bit cynical but he had a point.
We'll see how Macron gets on. As John Fogerty said "Five year plans and new deals , wrapped up in golden chains". He wrote it in the JFK era, (who took them into Vietnam) it could equally have applied to Blair (Iraq) and now Macron.
I don't see a golden future and hope, for my girls sake, I'm wrong.

Marine Le Pen is going to re-name the Front National (Conservatives?) and says she will hold Macron to account. We will have to see how her party does in the Assembly elections in June. She reckons she will win next Presidential election when Macron can't get anything done. One certainty is she has no intention of quitting.

I think she could be right, macron coming on to stage last night to the European anthem was a smack in the face to the people of France who voted for change

The biggest problem for the FN and Le Penn is they still carry to much unsavoury historical baggage and Marion who could take them over is even more xenophobic (bet she has an ss uniform an a whip):D . The younger generation maybe less concerned by this, but they are also less concerned by migrants and protectionism.

Politicians say many things during the election rallies... once in the office they realize that majority of the lofty ideas are not feasible. Let's see Mr Macon first year in the office and what contribution is he going to make to FR and EU.
We need peace and financial stability, which leads to prosperity.
As a banker he should know how to achieve financial stability, but with the EU barn-door wide open, peace and security will be more difficult to achieve.

What is normally played? It seems extremely insulting to everyone in France, not just those who wanted a change. Perhaps the EU is already in its "Fourth Reich" mode as "Dick" of FWi would have put it.

Very much the same performance as the Last Night of the Proms after the Twin Towers. Ode to Joy was played then too, instead of Rule Britannia and Jerusalem etc. It was the very time to put patriotism forward.

Didn't know there was a European Anthem. I quite like Ode to Joy (y) Not as good as La Marseillaise or Amhran na Bhfiann, but much better than a lot of sh!t anthems out there.

. ‘Ode to Joy’ has been used to “celebrate great public events” under the Nazi regime, it has been anchored and conflated with the struggle of Communism under the Soviet Union, it has been used under Mao Zedong’s China, to promote the ideals of the Cultural Revolution, which went down in history as one of the greatest human rights atrocities to date alongside the Holocaust, the Rwandan Genocide and the Cambodian genocide, just to name a few. If we venture just across the Indian Ocean, ‘Ode to Joy’ has been used as the national anthem for the South Rhodesian Independence movement, a movement that abhorred communism and lionized white supremacy in all of its totality. Upon the alteration of the melodies lyrics, Beethoven’s song was used as a median to incite a shared feeling of brotherhood, one that knowingly excluded fellow black brothers and sisters. It has also been used to unite Marxist guerillas fighters in the Peruvian foothills such as the Shining Path and more recently it has been incorporated as the national anthem for the Council of Europe and the European Union.

Rule Britannia, usually played to celebrate the warm love bestowed by British imperialists on erstwhile independent nations throughout the globe.

i just copied it from Wikipedia.

In 1981 I was in Zimbabwe walking down a street in Harare (independence had only just happened) whistling the tune, blissfully unaware of its use in the Smith regime and I was very nearly mugged by a group of black Zimbabweans
The tune is wonderful, it is what it represents in terms of human repression and misery and the terrible people that have used it as an anthem in the past.

It certainly would not be my choice of anthem with that in mind.
