Why are the mangers not fixed directly onto the wall. The down pipe would go straight into the manger then. No need for the bends. We have same feeders in our parlour. Have had some clog up the top by auger due to the fine snow last year blowing onto the feeder tops. The once melted the water seeps into where the auger is and goes to mush. Have to then take cake out of the hopper, remove the hopprer and then clean the auger area. Design of the hopper joint to the feeder is the issue.
We wash the mangers and walls out every day, but make sure no water goes near the feeder. Jobs fine then.

Had similar issues last year, but our feeders are outside wall of the parlour. Only an issue one side tho, I think the problem was that rain and mousture was blowing in and running down the augure pipe down the hopper. Seales the building better and its only happed to one this winter, and that was due to whole in the roof. Thought about putting silicon on the hoppers, but i think rhe problem is sorted now.

It used to have an adjustable brisket rail on it originally. The frame made more sense than a wall. The auger pipes are through the middle of the hopper to stop water getting into the top of the hopper. It looks like its dust build up from the nuts and cows breath up the pipe. most probably water from washing it down as well. The solution does seam to be working and maybe good to wash pipes out to stop mold building up. Time will tell

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
