I think most of the direct-drillers who used to be on FWI and BFF have migrated to TFF with the exception of kpa and slejpner. It doesn't take many postings or discussions before you know who you are talking to even if they are hiding under a pseudonym.

I was on FWI more or less from the start. I used to enjoy the contributions from Old Macdonald. He had a vast agricultural knowledge gained from farming in the UK and abroad. He is now producing olives in Portugal, at least he was the last time I saw a post from him. I hope that he is still with us.

FWI is as good as dead now, and BFF is not much better. I think that there was an Old Macdonald occasionally posting on here, but I thing that may be someone else.
who were you on FWI then ?

probably just sign up for a look, I have friends who never post , the worry the big dogs may eat them

Oh, their are many that "look" but don't put there heads above the parapits. You'd be surprised how many folk look at posts that are relevant to them, but don't comment in public. Can't blame them as in some respects and despite the mods best efforts, sensible comments are sometimes lacking! You need a thick skin and a British sense of humour (laugh at yourself) to "come out", no! Not like that for those that are thinking of something else!! How long before this post gets comments?

Maybe. Some, like me, probably started on usenet with slow dial up connections. Going on line more than twice a day was hugely time consuming. The habit may have stuck meaning most posts have been fully covered by the time I get to read them.

Within 17400 members the *big dogs* may translate as those with more experience/knowledge which can be a little intimidating.

I am here to learn from others and to offer help on the very rare occasion I can:)
Of all the sites I go on, I would say that this is one of the least intimidating. I don't know whether this is as my knowledge of forum etiquette has improved or that there are genuinely nicer people in the farming community.
Even on the more contentious threads opposing views always seem to be given consideration,

What's the most intimidating you go on...

I post a bit as i did on FWi and have learned a lot in both places, more here though than there as there are more contributors.

My point being though, I look at many threads, I don't post on many of those though as I realise that I have nothing extra to add or that I am not as wise as I thought on that subject, I do quite often drop a like in though to show the poster that someone else loves them or their view.

Would that qualify me as a lurker though?

I know one member who doesn't ever post and that is because he is worried that everyone else will take the pee, I let that wash over me (illegal now in the UK I understand)

And your point is right. The fact is that most people are on the Internet to surf rather than to contribute. Me included. We are all lurkers, most of the time! TFF creates the right environment where plenty of people are prepared to contribute so the rest of us can read and learn (well at least some of the time). In an ideal world, many more would post their views and share their knowledge but as you say, it actually requires confidence which not everyone has.

Heck if you are thinking of learning off such as me the world's doomed!

I used to post on FWI, recognise a few characters on here, then it seemed to go quiet. The other side wouldn't let me post and a forum based on the residence of a well known chef started slapping my wrist, so I ended up on here.
Bad penny, that's me.:(
