G P S theft

I Ken, but yellow belly said they should be locked, and you said they don’t have two way communication - which they do.
No they don't. NTRIP by and large is one way comms as is a UHF correction system.

The only thing an NTRIP enabled receiver will send back to the correction provider (bot necessarily the receiver manufacturer) is the current position of the unit. Which if the unit is exported is practically useless as its not tied to a serial number or anything that readily IDs the receiver.

So we have established they are two way communication devices then

You're missing the point. There is no way possible, unless NTRIP was completely re-written, for you to remotely shutdown or disable or even identity a GPS receiver that is stolen. its a very common but completely false misconception.

Having '2-way comms' does not automatically/magically allow you to do any of that.

Also as Brisel noted, quite a large portion of RTK enabled receivers are just using UHF correction, and probably more Greenstar than others, as JD and NTRIP was never a really big thing.

You’re missing the point that some posters were suggesting that given the massive cost of these devices a change is needed to make them worthless when stolen. Re-writing NTRP would be that change.

That software doesn't currently exist. John Deere SF6000 receivers can be PIN protected & mechanically locked to the cab roof but that's about it. The older screens are removable in 2 minutes but the newer ones are integrated in the armrests.

I can't speak for other brands though removing our Trimble receiver from the combine involves opening the tank lids and unbolting it. The shed mine lives in is low enough that the lids can't be opened & the vehicle is immobilised.

Yep. A change is needed

The brutal truth is if JD really wanted to do this, then in my view given they already control both the NCT protocol and their own correction signals from the birds that broadcast SF1/2/3. Then it could’ve been done by now, at least within the bounds of their own ecosystem. Given also that that are arguably the easiest and most stolen bit of Ag GPS gear.

I guess they just don’t want to.

A large number of gps units were literally hacked off machines at the Nottingham hq from under the noses of the security staff so the problem isn’t just confined to farmers. It is a crime fuelled by a demand. A classic case of the “have” and the “have nots”.

I had to pick some parts up one night from there and just drove in and wandered about for 20 minutes or more as I couldn’t find the right door! Nobody approached me at all!

So once again. If JD actually gave a sh!t, they could simply look the serial numbers up, when these stolen units came time to buy a sub - a simple lookup could flag them up as stolen.

Do they though? :scratchhead:

(The answer by the way is no, as it makes poor business logic to throw the towel at a future customer....who wants to buy your subs. Capisco everyone?)

Stellar support would flag the units up as stolen, but whether they can be activated again I don’t know. Someone must be able to get them functioning otherwise they would be worthless. It does seem strange that the units are just cut off instead of just squeezing the cable clip which would have to be replaced I presume. Obviously a world I have no understanding of.

It was a shock to me to discover, how easy the third world has stolen our technology and it is with the tacit approval of the providers.
When my sister was kidnapped the negotiator had a stolen iphone of the latest tech and regularly updated. Dont ask me how I know!
The infrastructure in Somalia had been provided by an Australian charity whose workers were allowed to travel with no risk.
From the providers viewpoint our phone/ GPS unit will be replaced by insurance and they can supply an updated latest tech unit to the.victim.
In the meantime the recipients of this stolen tech will be provided limited services, which hopefully sometime they will want to upgrade to the latest model. That is of course if they cannot source a stolen replacement.
In the meantime if your phone is stolen it may be possible to discover the next recipient via good old facebook!:)

All this tech's getting stolen now despite the fact it usually has a driver when its away from a yard and the rest of the time is parked somewhere secure (ish).
Wait till Clives automated army of self drive machines are running up and down paddocks day and night unattended. As fast as you put them in the paddock the pikeys will have them in containers and gone:rolleyes:
