Gale Breaker

Hi all,

Thinking of putting gale breaker onto the Yorkshire boarding of the sheep shed. At the one end it we currently have a lot of weather coming in through it. If we put gale breaker over the boarding how effective would this be?

Any other suggestions would be helpful if you don’t think the gale breaker would be worth while.

Cheers all.

We put 3 gale breakers on our calf rearing and youngstock shed a few months ago. It's 20 foot to the eaves and 50 foot wide. The rain used to drive half way in the shed and soak everything and the wind was horendous and would blow straw everywhere. Now the rain comes a couple of foot in the shed and that's it, has completley transformed it and I think there's a 10 year warranty to!

I have galebreaker on many sheds without YB (or space boarding before the purists come out to bite me)

It makes an excellent environment, if you already have YB it would make it easier to fix - battens and nails.

I have some 15’ wide by 10’ high bays that are currently open. What would galebreakers cost in these bays roughly?

I’ve got some of the official galebreaker bay screens covering 25ft bays and they work well. Was a quick job when we decided to swap the straw barn for livestock use, if I’d had more time on my hands I would have considered how to fit the other stuff I linked to.

Those eco blinds look really good. The problem with gale breaker roller blinds is they blow in the wind as they’re not secured at the side which weakens them.
They are very popular the covers are made from a tough, interlocked knitted textile which will not fray or ladder like some others, they are very durable.

I've one side of a firewood shed I'd like to be able to screen from the elements in the winter, and open in the summer for seasoning. Do they keep the rain out?
They are very effective against wind and rain offering very good protection I'd say rather than completely water tight.

A couple of testimonials from the web site;

"Econoblinds suit my poly tunnel perfectly. Quick and easy to fit they cut out drafts and driving rain"
David Lyon, Hardington Mains, Biggar, Lanarkshire.

“We fitted an Econoblind and have to say what an excellent product it is for greatly reducing wind and rain in the building"
Simon Hart, Lucemm Contractors Ltd. Calne, Wiltshire.

Roughly the same price as fully cladding with vented tin.

I understand your thinking, and Galebreaker is quick to put up...

But you've already got space boarding. Run another 2 light battens on the outside of the boarding that's there, then put another layer of staggered boarding on - which cover the gaps.

The light batten only needs to be a york board, it'll keep the boards separate so there is still an air gap for ventilation, but it'll stop 99% of the weather getting in.
You will lose natural light, but IMO you will with the Galebreaker anyway with what you're thinking

we used some scaffolding net on internal buildings to stop the draft - couple of folks I know have used it on swinging doors, works very well and is a fraction of the price to galebrakers
