Getting concerned

That proves how wet it is,that's
the first poor picture of a crop you've ever posted :)
It’ll be the first time I’ve re drilled anything in my farming career( I’m 57), so can’t complain . The amount of rain it had after drilling was the problem. That was after potatoes , so not a heavy field

I feel sorry for you and your efforts , sowing here was never an option , so spose we could be lucky
Thanks, but I’m thankful for what we’ve done . Ordered some spring barley seed today for the rest and to re do that field. If it ever dries up. Me and you will have seen it all, but we are still here.(y)

When do you think you can sow winter barley until ?
I’ve no experience of sowing it after mid October, although my agronomist was reminding me of someone locally that would sow it in December after lifting beet, but that was very light land.
I guess seedbed conditions and a crystal ball on what weather coms after, is more important than date.

I was thinking on your ground it might well be good to sow in mid feb for eg, so why buy spring barley if you have winter?

If you are going this late you need to up the seed rate because they don't tiller well at this time of year and you will need a strong PGR programme. Plus they really won't like being muddled in.

Technically they will vernalise ok when drilled over winter but you are probably better off putting a spring barley variety in and holding on to the seed until next year, from a yield point of view.

The above is intended as guidelines not a recommendation.
