Gift for my farmer

Evening all,

I know that you’re all very busy right now, but I’d just like to ask for some advice.
Our farmer who supplies our stables with hay and straw kindly lets me metal detect on his land and I’d like to get him a gift that would be useful to him. I can always get him some beers or something like that anytime, so if you have any suggestions please let me know. Cheers

Does he have a sense of humour? A bird watcher? We have a few, good for a laugh.

Since detecting is about history, why not skip buying anything, but instead spend a wet afternoon or two at the records office and write up a few pages on the history of the farm. Put it in a folder with copies of the older pre-OS maps, etc; relate it to your finds with photos, and then give a copy to the farmer.
You would benefit by looking into the history and the farmer would have a record to keep and show his family and friends.
As a farmer who potters about here with a detector, I find there is a difference between the detectorists view of history (which revolves around searching for and researching the finds), and my view as a farmer (the story of the farm is more interesting and finds are just extras) . I'm as happy finding part of grandad's Fordson as a silver coin, but to many folks any iron is just "hedge fodder".

That's true. I wonder how many bottles are passed around as currency?
Some bottles must spend their existence being passed around in exchange of a favour, never getting drank
That's what happens here- someone leaves a bottle for a thank-you, which is very kind but I don't really drink much, so it joins the other bottles awaiting re-gifting on the dresser. Then the next visitor sees all the booze, thinks we must be alcoholics and gives us even more booze.
I'll never get through all the bottles I've accumulated and the house looks like an off license.
