Must be great if you farm in the sunny south!Try farming up here with out it.
I fully appreciate global location will have a bearing on glyphosates importances and yes as you say farming in the south of GB should be somewhat easier without desiccating pre harvest. I accept I should have added try or experiment weening ourselves off using as desiccant.

Maybe folks need to stop lashing it on because a few more passes with a sprayer and the latest no till drill is waaaay cooler than using a plough.....

despite lack of evidence that it is harmful I would agee that it would be a good idea to have some form of stewardship that shows that as an industry we do take public fears seriously and are trying to reduce use wherever possible

Well the first thing I did last night after rejoicing was to check some wheat after spuds drilled Nov after ploughing and max tillage. Crop shoot just under soil surface . Black grass at 1 leaf !! I have used more glyphosate on ploughing than nontilling this year. 2L on in the twilight. Most important spray of season

Can you explain that and what’s happening in France please?

Member States of the European Union have voted in favor of a new five-year authorization of the herbicide. France will go it alone, and remains focused on a period of three years.

It needed a qualified majority, the European Commission got it. Eighteen countries, representing more than 65% of the population of the European Union, voted on 27 November 2017 in favor of its proposal. The glyphosate is therefore re-authorized for a period of five years.

Germany changes its mind
Nine opposed and one country abstained, achieving the required qualified majority, unlike a first vote in early November. Germany, which had abstained in early November, has voted in favor of the proposal.

Berlin has requested amendments to the text related to restrictions on private use of glyphosate and respect for biodiversity, according to a source familiar with the issue. This change in position helped to tip the balance in favor of a new authorization.

Satisfaction to the Commission
"Today's vote shows that when we want, we can share and accept our collective responsibility in decision-making," said EU Health Commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis, quoted in a statement.

The Commission will now adopt a decision before the current authorization expires on December 15. If Monday's vote on appeal had also stalled, the European executive should have decided.

"At the latest in three years" in France
If Stéphane Travert says he is "happy" that an agreement has been found, Brune Poirson, Secretary of State to Nicolas Hulot, reaffirms that "France remains determined to get out of glyphosate in less than five years". On Twitter, she says that "despite the vote in Brussels, France remains determined to leave the glyphosate in less than five years. We are working with all actors to find credible alternatives. "

That's not saying it's banned in 3 years .

Quite interesting seeing the North/South decide on here over Glyphosate use. Those in the South saying desiccating is crazy whereas we in the North generally don't get warm growthy weather after harvest to spray repeated flushes of grass weeds before sowing next crop in the way those with Blackgrass use it.

Sprayed my entire acerage of Spring barley and winter wheat over a weekend here this year and finished harvest on 1st September after 6 days of cutting. Neighbour's only managed to cut 150 acres in the following 3 weeks with a 20ft machine as no weather window.

Had I not used glyphosate i would have been in the same boat. Makes a big difference for storage too as you don't have the greens in the bulk pile so can get away without drying it before uplift by maltsters.

How long did you leave it between spraying and harvest?

I don't understand the talk of whether you should use it as a desiccant or not. Either it is harmful to human health or it isn't. If this stuff was a known and serious carcinogen, it would be banned, whether you only used it on grass leys between 1st August and 30th August, or not.

These green pressure groups simply want the active banned. They know it is widely used, and it a very useful tool in the box. What better way to hit into the heart of intensive farming in Europe than getting their key actives banned.
