Good cheap tractor and finance

Hello all,

I really could do with buying myself a tractor - the situation is fairly complicated but more or less I have use of father's maxxum 125, but as I am doing more contracting and other work with it (including a fair bit of extra road work) its really getting to the point where I need something of my own - not to mention the fact that 2 people trying to use 1 tractor is a bit trying at times. Looking for something that will be nice to use, comfortable and reliable but also not too expensive. Really dont want to spend over £20,000 but £15-18k would be nicer. Other issue (or not depending how you look at it) is it will need to be purchased on finance. Does anybody have any experience with buying second hand kit on finance and know what the best way to handle this is? Would like to pay it off over 3 years ideally but a longer term with the option of paying it off sooner would be nice (if that exists). The farm has always just bought a brand new tractor, trading in the old one against it and having it on 0% finance, which is fine if you have one to trade in, but in this instance that isnt really an option. I am also needing to replace the small baler this year, wandering if maybe to finance the tractor and baler together and if that would yield a better interest rate?

As for what make and model... what do people reckon I can get? I'd quite like to have gears and linkage controls on the same stick (like on a basic spec modern NH) but I expect getting that would be a struggle within budget, even the early models of that without the linkage control look quite nice. Ideally would like to have some form of fuel usage recording (like datatronic) and a front linkage. Cab and front axle suspension would be nice too. All depends on what is about though really, second hand tractors are obviously making a lot of money at the moment!

Should probably add after around 110-150+ horsepower. Ideally over 130 as would like the option of being able to put the 5 furrow plough and the combi drill on it.

Good and cheap don't always go together and 2nd hand machine finance will be more expensive than subsidised 0% new tractor deals.
30k you may get a better chance .
15-20k struggle possibly.

Unfortunately I don't think you'll find what you want for £20k it'll be more likely £30-40k.

Saying that there was a Massey 6499 in a a sale for £20k last week., 10500k hours no idea what reliability will be like.

No, but I will think about that now! Thats why i made this thread after all.
You might find more success with a broker on older kit, general cut off is 10 years old. Luke Ward is good and have used him a few times in the past. 00 series Deeres are solid work horses and you'll find tidy ones at your budget

NH 8360 or earlish TM?? What about a preserved maxxum 5140/ 50? Mx120/135 probably more findable. Massey 64xx dyna 6 maybe but be wary of the gearbox letting go.

Whatever you buy is going to need bringing up to par, and regular tinkering to keep it just right, as the work you mention is fairly hard going.

Last thing you want is a previously-demoted-to link box work type machine that boils like a kettle the moment you show it the plough.

You also want something where parts are cheap ish, and plentiful so stay away from the more obscure brands.

Yes, on that last point I was kind of avoiding the deere's for that reason. I know what their parts are like from owning a deere baler! Will get my mechanic to look over any potential candidates so hopefully should catch anything too seriously wrong, and at least then he cant laugh at me when it blows up.. Im relatively profficient with a spanner so I dont mind tinkering a bit. Not expecting a brand new machine at all - im not that stupid.

last i wouldtouch would be a tm or 40 series, based on my experience but im not aa nh fan.

mf 6290?
older valmet are pretty good in fairness 8050 series etc but not alot of power shifts but they operate nice i find compared to the Rc in our MXM and the sle of the 7740 and TS.

00 series deere i would really look at too but are probly top end of your budget for a tidy one.

A plus note for MF, Valmet/Valtra, renault/claas or deere is gearboxes are all nice when shifting and dont jump or have slow changes requiring alot of calbration at times such as the gearboxes fitted to NH-just my experience
