Good Small Phone

My trusty old xperia XZ1 compact gave up on me today... Stopped seeing my sim card, and also stopped seeing wifi or bluetooth. A phone that doesnt do phone calls is a bit of a waste of space... I really really like my XZ1 compact, so much so that when i ran my old one over with the tractor (the only thing that could actually break the screen on it...) i bought an identical second hand one to replace it. However, if the second hand ones arent going to last, I'm going to have to get a new phone. Needs to be small (the XZ1 compact was the perfect size for me, 4.6" screen), very hard to kill (the xz1 compact was waterproof, and had no glass back, so was a lot more durable). Needs a good sized battery, and reasonably fast processor. Also would very much like the headphone jack, as i have a wired stereo i like to use while my phone is charging. Not worried about the camera or display or anything, i have a DSLR for taking pictures and a computer for watching video! preferably would have another sony, as they seem to last longer than the samsungs (which i would want to avoid really, as my previous phone was a Samsung A3 which went for 2 years and then became very very slow and only lasted half a day) Any suggestions are welcome!

I've had exactly the same problem.

Went for Samsung S10e as this was the next smallest on the market.
Hate it. Power and volume buttons opposite each other, so I keep taking screenshots when I want to close the screen.

Another thing i really liked was the fingerprint sensor in the power button. Brilliant idea and for some reason they dont do that any more. Turn it on and it instantly unlocks

I've got a S10E. Fingerprint recognition? !!🤣 very rarely works. Took it back 2 shop and complained. .. this was pre 'covid. After Assistant had dashed away to disinfectant hands .. several times .. note, this was long before Covid.. as it was a farmers phone 😱 it REALLY WASNT that dirty .. she explained that it worked for her.. true and VERY irratating! .. as she had 'retail hands, whereas mine were 'manual' hands, frequently changing, so the recognition wouldn't work. Charming'!

I've an iPhone8 in a plastic condom and it's just the right size for me. My wife has a much larger iPhone7 Plus and she loves it, but carries it in her handbag and I'm not about to start carrying one of them.
Its about as small as I can manage and about as big as I can manage also. Find the keyboard to be on the small size and the screen size a bit small, but it is the best compromise because it easily fits in my pockets. Newer ones do away with the waste of space that is the bottom bezel that has the home button, so their screens are bigger for the same overall size of phone.

I've found Motorola phones to be very good indeed. The G8 Power Lite is available for £100+VAT with a battery that lasts up to three days.
Anything with a 6" screen or smaller is considered 'small' by today's standards, so perhaps a Google Pixel 4a at 5.8" would suit? About £350 [£291.67+VAT] inclusive though. It is the budget Google Pixel phone.

The iPhone SE 2020 is pitched by Apple at the budget end and is actually an improved iPhone 8 [like mine] and 'only' costs £325 inclusive if you fancy dipping your toes into Apple's orchard. It does everything I need and has done for three years and is like new. A condom is essential for it and any other phone at the very least, in my opinion.

Smaller than this one but with a bigger screen is the iPhone 12 mini, which is debatably the very best phone available on the market currently. £499+ £100VAT means it is a mid-range price for a high end phone. 5.4 inch screen which is basically the diagonal size of the phone, which is probably little bigger than your old one. It's an iPhone 12 in specification but smaller and cheaper and the one I would choose for myself today if I ran a tractor over my iPhone8. Or perhaps I'd go for the full size 12 which is the same size as my 8 but with a significantly bigger screen with no wasted space.

If i was forced into buying a new one it would be between the pixel and the iphone 12. SE aparently has bad battery life. Problem with the iphone is that they break if you so much as think about dropping them. I've managed to get my old xperia going again by combining the two together to make one that works! The one i ran over somehow all that broke was the screen (shows how well they are made) so i was able to take the screen off of it's replacement, and just replace the screen on the first one. Works fine. Had to glue it back together with areldite and it seems to be working fine... There is definitely a gap in the market for a small, cheap phone with good battery life that can survive farm abuse. i dont need 20 cameras on the back, just the one for taking pictures of serial numbers on parts i need to replace!
