Government announces new funding to improve rural broadband...

Rural businesses and communities are set to benefit from improved broadband access as part of a £45 million boost by the government.

The new funding for the government’s Rural Broadband Infrastructure Scheme adds to the £30 million investment announced last year, increasing the total pot of funding available to £75 million.

The money will be made available through grants to local authorities that have already applied for funding, in areas where broadband services at speeds of 30Mbps or faster are not available or planned. The funding will be used to support full fibre wherever possible.

3Mb would be nice. :(
A reliable 1mb would be a massive improvement.

Headlines like the above can be interpreted to "The Government is trying to make themselves look good by announcing wonderful news that the local authorities and BT are going to get a £45m payout and one or two internet users are going to get a better connection, but only if they live close to the exchange and are probably on a pretty good connection anyway. The relatively few people outside such catchments don't make any difference to the statistics so the can get stuffed"

I went to a Government meeting (on behalf of TFF) on this a couple of years ago and this target of "SuperFast" everywhere was talked about around the table. I asked what this meant and was told 20MB. I said the same as above that I was on SuperFast in Cornwall and only got 1.6mbs. That did allow me to function, but 4-5 would be nice for sure.

At the time they wanted to get it to 98% of the country, but that may only represent 50% of farmers as we are often outside the boundaries.

Hopefully this new money will go where its needed, rather than increasing a 20mb supply to a 80mb supply in the city.

grrrrrrrr 28 months into trying to get rural broadband! Started at local council level with loads of council and Openreach meetings. Then 8 months of back and forth e mails with some senior manager at Openreach, followed by more meetings. Hadn't heard anything since Dec 18 when the local council committee said we'd know more in early Jan. So called them up, got someone new who was handling the case but didn't know the details (!!!!) enthusiastically asked if I wanted to arrange a meeting!!

for the sake of my sanity and hair I've decided to leave it. these councils just live from one meeting the next, and we pay their wages.

When is 5G coming??
