Grain drying, trench conveyor or auger set in floor?

I'm replacing my dryer and handling facilities for harvest 2020. What is the benefit (or otherwise) of a trench conveyor? I had in my mind that I would simply have an extended filling auger set flush with the floor surrounded by grain walling to allow grain to be pushed up pretty high.
Would a trench conveyor allow the wet handling area to be smaller by holding more itself and filling the dryer quicker?
Our combine whilst claiming 28t/hr does more like 15-20t/hr.
My concern with anything set deep in the floor i.e. pit/trench etc is how you clear it if in the unlikely(?) event of a problem. Short of digging it out by hand. Obviously an auger set flush with the floor can simply be cleared with the forklift.
Currently considering Opico/Mecmar or maybe Perry dryers.
Definitely don't like bins which have to be filled by the forklift to feed the dryer.

more reliable and lower power than augers. Small stones can jam augers.
both can block if overloaded. auger very simple but not my choice.

What's wrong with a large bin to fill the drier

Don’t go for extended auger set below floor.
Got opico with that and a pile of moist grain on top of it and in the full length of the extended auger is just to much for it on start up of next batch and shears the fill auger.
Leaving it with as little grain as possible in it between batches cures the problem but kind of defeats the purpose of having a concrete panelled bay that holds a couple of dryer fulls in the first place.

Reason i wanted it that way rather than large bin was to have ability of tipping trailer direct if need be rather than loading with forklift.
Have natural split floor level with mine which lended itself to having fill auger sitting below floor level of wet grain bay anyway.

Undecided whether to replace with trench conveyor, reduce grid opening from grain bucket width to just 2-3ft or go for bin over it like @Robert K

Should think Perry of Oakley would give good advice on your best options.

If you go for the bin option make sure its wide enough for a decent telehandler bucket full[/QUOTE]

Bins are a bit of a ball ache over 12/15 tonnes. I would have a shallow trench conveyor running the full width of either a 20 or 30ft bunker set in about 3ft from the back wall. If you have a wedge/ramp behind the grid it makes clearing up a doddle.

Here is our drying setup. Perry trench conveyor in the wet bay across the back feeding the drier. 40ft x 20ft wet bay holds about 90t and we just keep pushing wet grain to the back. Simple but works well. Drier then unloads into either the store conveyor or the cleaner.

A tidy setup, this is pretty much what I have in mind.

What sort of moisture are you getting that problem at? It is mostly spring barley we are drying, although osr and oats too. Not taking out huge moistures(hopefully!). Generally spring barley no wetter than 19-20%

Wheat over 20% generally when it goes.
This is the first year in the last 5 that I haven’t had the auger break.
Might be OK in barley at those levels but if starting from scratch I’d be looking at other ways.

I have the v shaped tin cover over the intake auger set as low as possible to minimise how much grain is going into it but still happens if auger is left full of grain between batches.

Dryer was 15 years old when I got the extended Opico intake and initially thought problem was new flights on intake/extension putting it in faster than central auger could recirculate it so reflighted that but didn’t help.

I should have consulted some grain handling experts at the time with mine rather than of the shelf Opico reps solution. A better sized auger combination might well work better.

I am sure Kenny Duncan/Perry will keep you right.

We have a tanked pit with an electric chute to control the flow into an elevator behind it
Just looks after itself.
Every time trailer comes in, driver just tips near pit then heaps it up
Can run for a couple of hours no problem
