Grain Trailer Simple Weigh Loader Gauge on Hydraulic Tipping System?

Does anyone know where I can get a weigh loader gauge to plumb in line with my grain trailer hydraulics? I have been told about them in the past but never seen one in the flesh but they can supposedly give a usefully reliable guide to the weight of the trailer's contents once calibrated. Does anyone use them / recommend them / know where I can get one? Thanks

All it is is a pressure gauge that can take tractor HYD pressure, you then have to load and weigh and tip to a repeatable height and make a note of the pressure of a few different loads.. level load etc will make it more accurate

I use one, gives good accuracy if instructions followed, which aren't too taxing, does need calibrating on weighbridge once, from this one load a table can be created covering total trailer weight

The idea was pioneered by Jim Wilkie, from Chipping Sodbury. His product was called a "Weighlode"

I think that he is retired, but he might provide you with more information, or even have some old stock. Tel: 015454 321010.

I had one made by RDS, called a "Weigh Gauge". It worked very well, provided each trailer was calibrated accurately.

Today, all RDS devices seem to be electronic Look them up at: rdstec.com I'm not sure if they do a relatively simple one for trailers.

If you google "weighload", you get all sorts of stuff about the ones fitted to tipper trucks.

Yes 01454, my mistake.

I have just delved into the filing cabinet, and see that Jim Wilkie's version was called a "Weylode" and that his business telephone No. was 01454 313305.

I sold my RDS version on ebay for £100, in 2008. It was bought new in the late 70s.

We use the RDS weighlog on our trailers simple to fit and once you've got your head around the calibrations easy to use always seem to be pretty similar totals to what the combine says never going to be as good as a weigh bridge but doesn't cost anywhere near hope this helps

So would a simple pressure gauge do the same thing provided you ran a few loads over the weighbridge at different weights then made up a chart to show what the different pressures mean?

I have new weylode guage in the shed it hasn't any writing on as you calibrate it and write the weights on a clear disc on the front,I bet its near 8" round.

Should do.

Just make sure you always crowd the bucket to the same degree, ie right back, and always take the reading with the loader elevated to the same height to achieve consistancy. Put an indicator mark on the loader arm and align it with one on the machine bonnet or chassis.

Yes it will as long as it is in the same position every time you weigh, you need to be consistent so it remains calibrated to the position. If that makes any sense!!!!

I bet its a fair bit cheaper than the proper loader one,a piece of chain on the boom would work as reference point.

Would it need a isolator valve when tearing into a heap ?

To prevent damage it is vital that the gauge is not subject to hydraulic pressure when the loader, or trailer is lifting. There must be an isolator valve between the gauge and the lifting pipes.

The correct technique is to stop the lift at the correct height, open the valve to take the reading, close the valve and proceed to tip etc. The loader or trailer will have to be let right down before the next cycle so as to be able to open the valve for a moment to allow the gauge to return to zero.

We use a pressure gauge on the tipping pipe reading up to 3000 psi I think. Must be a bit more than your tractor max pressure. We take the reading when lifted just off chassis, I.e. about quarter of an inch up. This is where pressure is greatest.

To calibrate, we took full load to weigh bridge and weighed it, then read pressure. E.g. 10 tonnes was 1500 psi.
Next we read pressure with trailer empty and just off chassis rests. It was about 150 psi.

So scale factor = 10 / (1500 - 150)

From then on we could calculate the load in the trailer as

(Pressure - 150) x scale factor

Alternatively, it might be possible to get somebody like Budenberg to do you a scale on the gauge itself reading in tonnes if they know the empty PSI and the full weight and PSI.

The key to accuracy is always to load the trailer evenly and always take the pressure reading at the same height just up off the chassis.

I don't think you need isolator valve on tipping pipe as max pressure is when you measure, and it's not a shock load.

For health and safety get a gauge big enough to read through the cab back window. High pressure lines next to operator is not a good idea in case of a burst.
