Not sure where to put this topic so move if it's wrong place

Just thought I'd ask is there a way I could get green bedding dryer thought I would ask as others might have ideas or experience drying wood chip and grain so they might have some ideas we don't have a biomass, ad plant and won't use gas

Would a big fan work ???

I think Gregor Colquhoun up in the north east of Scotland was putting in a wood burner to dry the green bedding for his 800 cows at Dendoldrum Dairy

Went up to Newton Rigg a few years ago when they were doing trial work on it. They were using it fresh because if they tried drying it or left it heaped up overnight they started getting cell count and bactoscan problems. They also said that once on the beds the body heat of the cows helped to dry it.

Yes we was putting on fresh couple years ago then bedding with lime every day went off it because bedding was getting wetter and harder to get thru put so went back to sawdust we have just done full strip down of our separator found out it had a layer of lime caked to the inside we are now off lime and using actisan which has lowerd cell count considerably others have installed drying floors composte tumblers like BRU

You have to careful with the BRU / compost tumbler system. As much as I would like to be selling them to you all, they are technically illegal in the UK as they are classified as composting, and we are not allowed to bed on compost. I do know of a competitor who has sold one to a dairy unit in the UK, but we (Bauer/FAN) will not contravene the current DEFRA legislation.

We have commissioned a research project which has come back with what we think is sufficient evidence to change the DEFRA position, but until this Brexit shambles is sorted there is little chance of this getting looked at inside Whitehall.

If anyone wants to speak to me about this I am more than happy to discuss it, just give me a shout

Never mixed lime with our green bedding. Always thought it would be like pis$ing in the wind with all the bacteria in it. Never had a problem though but we do use a barrier dip post milking which I think helps.

How dry will your machine get it. I used to try and get ours really dry. These days as long as I can't squeeze water out of it that will do.

Yes I agree, barrier dip is the best but we're running adf so not able to use it
Started with lime but can't mix it consistant enough so stopped.
How often are you washing the screen?
Can get it really dry after washing screen but need to do that every 3 weeks
