Probably been asked before,but is sf1 accurate enough for drilling ? Local dealership says hes got quite a few people drilling with it . What about drift if going back to farm to fill up? Any advice please..
depends on what you feel is acceptable and every farm has a different perception of that - some say its fine but it certainly wasn't up to the standard I like our work to be done to, SF2 wasn't either really, it was RTK before I was happy ............but maybe I'm an unreasonable perfectionist !
I drill with sf1 at 3m. Pass to pass it's fine and miles better and more accurate than following a mark. You may have to recenter your mark after filling with seed. I can't see what economic advantage you would gain over it paying for sf2 accuracy and rtk is in my opinion only relevant to veg growers, until we see driverless tractors anyway.
We drill on sf1, it's fine but has its limitations. It's not great if you try to work in lands and if you leave it for a while to fill up or whatever it will probably need to tb nudged when you go back. You may also need to nudge it occasionally when working just to correct it a bit.
Can't really see the point in sf2, I think if you want better than sf1 and are willing to pay for it you need to go rtk to get repeatability and pin point accuracy.
I drill with sf1 and find it drifts over time and needs correcting on odd occasions in line with my markers which I still use as insurance. Am I right in thinking to map a field with Greenstar and use the data stored in the following years you need to be on rtk?
I think they can download some software to map boundaries of fields without having RTK. Think I might try sf1 to start with, but must admit do enjoy trying to drive straight on the markers. Everybody I have spoke to say you wouldn't go back after been on GPS.
Is it always in exactly the right place downloading maps? Be good if it was and I'll have to learn how to do it. Some days the tech is great, some days it's a pain in the arse and I'd happily run it over. Maybe that's because I don't fully utilise it tho!!!
I drill with sf1 it works fine pass to pass, I've tried sf2 and didn't notice any real advantage, I found that other free signals are not a patch on sf1 either. But as @Clive says if your want perfection and to be on ctf then you will need rtk
I have 29.95m on 30m tramlines using SF2 (1cm programmed overlap per 6m drill width).
SF1 is fine for drilling but as above, you may need to nudge the line when you come back after filling up & certainly next morning. Just hang your bout marker out on the last run before stopping & you have your line to restart on.
To get an idea of what short term drift is like for your system, work every other pass across a feild and then back again infilling. With satellite correction signal I find signal loss under trees and steering performance to get the tractor on line as quick as possible and stay there are bigger issues than signal accuracy for drilling in lands.
I dare say performance with SF1 has improved over the years. I use trimble rangepoint and since the last update and latest signal it has got a lot better, mainly the convergance time is much quicker which used to be a common headache with all the trees here. A lot of what appeared to be drift errors here were more likely the signal still converging while working. Waiting for it to converge after getting too close to a tree is frustrating.
I used sf1 last week to drill and was pleased with its accuracy. I then made a mistake and paid for a sf2 activation hoping it would be even better but it has been worse for some reason. I have gone back to sf1 and come to the conclusion that sf2 and the universal steering wheel motor aren't a great match due to the delay and thereby constantly trying to steer?. Different settings have been tried with no great success.
