GTL Fuel

I've looked into it a bit. Biggest problem I can see is it needs to go into a clean storage tank to start with and initially you may have a few issues as it cleans out everything from the old red diesal.

If you have had hassle with EN590 or gas oil then probably. They say you should not store regular fuel for more than 6 weeks, so I am thinking that fuel that we carry from October to July should probably be GTL next year.

We enquired but it was only available in a full artic load at a time so are waiting for the supplier to install tanks so we can get smaller amounts.

@Speedstar were you using this or am I wrong?

The amount of hassle and filter changes on the tanks and bowser we were doing last Oct it was worth thinking about!!
I don't know what they did but once we hot through a couple of bad tanks it's been ok other than a couple of cold frosty mornings the jcb forklift and R series JD have had slight issues but never had to change filters yet

Last fill was GTL, went straight into the EN590 tank. Haven’t been using it long enough to form an opinion but 1200 ac of spring drilling completed without a filter changed. Last autumn we were changing filters every other day on a couple of machines.

For the last 10 years or so I’ve been using cetane booster ( tipped in by driver every time tank filled ) Several Deere’s & a Manitou , no problem last winter . Main tractor had fuel filters 1200 hours ago / 10 months

Just tried some, brought as we knew we were going to store it overwinter
Main benefits are higher cetane rating, winter grade and stores longer
Our older 1990s tractors seem to start well and run fine on it, one did have fuel issues but may still be due to previous load of EN590 we had.
If i know we are going to store fuel longer than 3 months would give it another go, currently back with EN590 as that's all we could get recently.

There was an earlier thread about this. The stuff is made from natural gas so it is totally 'pure' and contains basically fudge all contaminants that occur in conventional supplies. I am sure someone said that some machines seemed to run better and you would get more time/hours of out of a tankful?

Magically GTL is also claimed to be non-toxic and biodegradable, I have no idea if that is true.

I think the 'overwintering' thing is a bit of a red herring. Our forager gets put in the shed with half a tank of diesel in September, then starts and runs OK in May.

I would be inclined to agree. Back in the day maybe fuel was made to different standards or whatever but modern fuel a lot cleaner I would have said.
