has the DD forum lost its "bite"?

Is the DD forum losing it's bite?

I cant help but think, despite clive's sterling efforts, an unintended consequence of the new structured format is hindering the innovative, 500 post long threads we used to get, that meandered miles of topic with often hints of creative brilliance. Has structuring direct drilling into its constituent parts resulted in a lack of those parts talking to each other, and some of the holistic insight which made a single DD forum so immediately accessible and debate perhaps more intense than it is today?

It is not as good as it was when it started there now is just some reporting but no guts to it. but I think the BASE UK is about the same may be was looking for something that was not there.

I think it would be better under one subject "Direct Drilling" in TFF. I sometimes forget to check the direct drilling bit for days when on TFF.

Happy to make it all one forum rather than sub divided if that's what's wanted ? Just though dividing it might make it more logical ?

It's a quiet time really right now, I think dd gets more attention when people are thinking less about harvest and more about establishment

Since the direct drilling was moved from its middle slot in TFF to the new position at the bottom, IMO at that point this is when there was a decline in posting ect?? Or is it just me??

See above for bite...and I think Clive's right: it is a quiet time of year.

But it's an interesting unintended consequence of having a cosy dd forum away from the hubbub of the main cropping etc forums, in that you lose the bite of having to explain what you're doing from first principles. We were keen not to have to argue with Chae1 and other 'non-believers' all the time, but perhaps it makes for boring reading?

Agree with Clive and Martian...its quiet time of year...most direct-drillers are quite "laid back" so are enjoying the fine weather, watching their plough/deep-till neighbours crops wilting in the sunshine..;)
Bullock-Tillage has a stand at the Game Fair and we have had a number of "well known" direct-drillers come in today telling us that their crops are looking just a bit better than they expected five weeks ago...and don't let on how we/they have done it..:sneaky: (unless they join BASE-UK which now has over 100 members)

I would suggest most farmers are outside enjoying the fine weather or maybe getting covered in dust and crap while fixing / preparing grain store/driers and combines ready for the wet harvest !!!

So back to my question, will the plough/deep till neighbours be changing to direct drilling as your crops look so much better in the dry weather?
Talking to a direct-drill/farmer/contractor..today..his comment was that an adjustable spanner works well when conditions are OK but when things are difficult you need a few more tools in your box a bit like no-till..!
