Have cattle hit the bottom?

In York, the week before last clean cattle firmed slightly but this week they showed no further improvement and Bulls were less if anything. Numbers are dropping so hopefully the supply/ demand imbalance will turn in our favour. Speaking to one of the butchers and he said that the public were "just right off beef at the minute" . if the press are to be believed the beef industry is largely to blame for climate change!

All talk today is that yes they have and cattle are going to get very short.

Which resulted in what can only be described an almost unreal trade today with many cattle needing another 100+ days of hard feeding selling to more than they will be worth then on the hook at current prices.

The deal with China will have an effect but physically sending any product out there is unlikely before the end of the year.
It seems a bit perverse to me that the cull cow trade has held up so well when prime cattle have come back so far. It's as though the burger beef market is almost immune to the downward forces that the rest of the market is susceptible to.

I noticed this some time ago when my poor grade cull cows were making as much as the best ones. They said the reason was bad cows were mincers and the good cows were cutters there was demand for mince but no demand for the meat

They want the meat but they want it cheap, mince is selling very well, thus why if you book in cull cows/ Fri steers they are lifted in 10/14 days, got some nice contx cattle and its 4/6 weeks currently, I bet if you said to them: Just pay me cull cow value for my smart contx cattle they would be lifted with 2 days of being booked in!!

Yes the good news is you’ve heard a shortage looming? Will it be enough to lift store cattle??

Store cattle were up £70/100 head today on the last few weeks.

On todays trade it would be madness to finish your cattle unless TB is an issue!

If stores go short trade will harden regadless of the prime price as the very big feeders seem very hungry for cattle.

I’m hearing that they are jammed up here only shifting half of what’s booked in. However maybe they are now frightened that they will lift
