still better than burning it in lines ! Damn certain thinking back to when haymaking, with little bales, by the 1,000's, we seem to remember the 'good years', rather than the crap ones, selective memory, l think it's called, but, l shall never forget pushing bales up, under the rafters, in boiling hot barns, which could only have been a very small % of the total.
On the other hand, in more recent times, l recall, with relish, the cash we used to get, from the horsey brigade, when we had our livery yard, and miss it now, the cash, not the horses.

hay makes poor bedding especially if its dusty.
spread it in the field and leave to grow in ,at least them some fertility and organic matter will be saved.
dont bale it if it isnt fit, and especially don't take it right in
if it is baled unfit.
and Dont forget straw with green / grass in it also can get very hot and can go up.

I am wondering if we need a 'hay from hell' thread.
Todays entry, this was go 3 at baling this rubbish, first go was 3 weeks ago when it was quite nice. Earlier this week the baler broke down. Today he came back, you can just see him against the threatening sky, nearly did a round before yet another downpour

Maybe look at that , I've a cheap round baler , ideal for dumping shite . good weather not necessary

we only have 15 acres left, 2nd cut, aiming for high protien, young grass. Well, that aint going to happen now, gone way past that stage. The latest l have actually made hay, is mid sept, but you need some really hot days to make it.

Why burn, pile it up to rot down, adding organic matter.
Any chance of some sales to experimental horticulture, I've sold dodgy hay/straw into that market.

Now, by no means do I mean to cause any offence, but, what the hell goes on for you and making hay? Is that rain forecast in the above pictures? When you see the original window does the weather just dramatically change and it just hasn't been right since?
I honestly feel your pain I really do. I would be in tears if that was mine.
What do you do now? Ted it back out or move the rows or leave it to nature?

My black hay was fit for haylage on july 4, but the forecast was good for next day so i left it for hay.
Rain came overnight and next day was damp followed by seven days of rain and hot humid days
Since then i was concentrating on the good stuff

Hay went from a Shortage in late June to a Supposed Glut in July but a lot of Rubbish made and now in August I dont know where we are , still hundreds of acres to do down South , so god knows now if its a shortage or a glutt

Some people think there's plenty of good hay about somewhere, but seem to fall short when I ask where it supposedly is.... So far out of the entire season we've had 2 nice weeks of hay making weather. That's it. In between we've smashed and grabbed some haylage to wrap. You might have JUST made hay if you kept turning it and forced it fit. Still a lot to do.... This is turning out to be one of the worst years for quite a while.

It's been one of the best hay years I can remember here. Plenty of good hay made, some by people who never make hay, and others have made extra so they don't have to make any next year. Stacks of small bales are a rare sight in Northern Ireland but some bales sat out for 3 or 4 days this year.
