I passed someone hedge cutting down the side of a public road on my bike. He was obviously trying to get his moneys worth judging by the ammout that was flying off. I moved as far right as I could and turned my face away but still got sprayed with big chips which stung a quite a bit. It annoyed me but not enough to stop and have a discussion with him although I'm sure some would and who could blame them. If someone, a child or anybody got hit in the face/eyes they could be seriously injured. I know hedges need cutting but please think when your on a public road about passers by and maybe look at an extra pass or two to help keep things a bit safer.

If I meet a headgecutter when out cycling... I stop!!?, make eye contact wit the driver and pretty much straight away they will stop, or I maybe i have to wait 30sec for him to get to a break in the hedge and he will stop there. I have never had to pass a cutter still cutting. Nobody had to tell me to do it that way either, just feels like the common sense approach...

Maybe you should have stopped and waited for the tractor driver to stop. He’s looking at the road in both directions, watching the hedge, and controlling the hedgecutter which is quite a task. He may not have seen you on your bike.
Would it have killed you to stop for a couple of seconds, pull over, to help keep things a bit safer?
It is not unknown for cyclists to ride between the arm and the tractor round here, most sane people would never go within 30 feet of a hedgecutter when it was working unless they’re in the cab with glass and safety panels.

In the 60ts we cut all the hedges by hand all done by Nov 5th .
And this one you will all like . The council made spot checks . Often on on pushbikes , if you hadn't brushed the road you had s fine through the post
I cut my own hedges including road sides which I take a fair bit of time on to stop exactly the problem I've outlined, you sound like one of those who doseent give a toss about anyone else. Well good look with your argument if you end up in court on the end of a damages claim.

Think strava has a lot to answer for! means cyclists lose the ability to stop in sensible places as don’t want to lose time so they can show off to their mates even if it means squeezing past a moving hedgetrimmer! just because there is a 2ft wide gap doesn’t mean it should be cycled up!
Sounds like most things these days, everyone wants to carry on without any consideration for anyone else, I always stop IF I see a cyclist, walker or horse but sometimes you dont see them if cutting round a pole etc, whats wrong with them waiting until you do see them and stop for them to pass

The problem you've outlined can be solved very easily as I've explained by waiting a few minutes to be "SEEN" then pass safely .
You were stupid enough to pass with out waiting it's your own fault !!
I dont have any roadside hedges so that won't be a problem, I do give a toss for peoples safety but lack sympathy for those that dont think and use their common sense, get themselves in trouble then blame everyone else !

I can understand your point, I’m always surprised when people gather with there kids to watch me mow grass, the rate those discs go around coupled with the conditioner fingers a loose blade could go miles , people don’t understand the dangerous position they are putting themselves in. The tec in hedge cutting really needs to advance abit mind
I passed 6 or more that day and yes I could stop at each one for 10 minutes whilst the driver 1) noticed me, 2) wondered what I was doing, 3) either stopped work or ignored me and carried on, and don't forget there's probably dozens of cyclists going to be passing the tractors plus other road users - so not practical for either party but my point is simply that if you want to cut your hedge down the side of a road then nibble it down over a few passes so your not covering the road in great big chips and endargeing passers by. Frankly you have to question why anyone would have a problem with that.

Is it the bike, the Lycra or the helmet that gives a percentage of cyclists the sense of godly like entitlement and importance?
Why should he stop immediately to let you past? He is doing a job that he does on that road once a year to help everyone else, your larking about on a bike!
