help me pick the best tedder

I was always told to run the PTO with the revs down a bit lower than 540 and drive steadily. I've only ever used an 8 rotor Kuhn (and a 4 rotor heap of junk years before that) and it did a lovely job. It was cut, left a day so the stubble around the swath dried out and then kicked out daily for 4 days. I raked it with a twin rotor rake and it made lovely hay.

I think there is a lot of difference between a relatively tall but less dense silage type ley that has been left to go for hay and a bit of permanent pasture that is always left for hay.

I have just changed my KV for a new 8.4m Malone. I am a little nervous about the change but after reading all the positive stuff on here about them, inparticular @neilo who has one and likes it, I thought I'd go for it. I've just used it on some heavy silage and it's done a wonderful job. Very impressed so far. Also, the machine is built very very well ?. Would recommend

I’m in the process of purchasing a new 6 rotar Tedder I’m between Malone and sip as great backup for both near me really swinging toward Malone as lots of them around here and do great work and I already run 3 Malone mowers. What your opinion?

I’ve had a 4 rotor Malone for a couple of years now, and very pleased with it. It teds well, moving all the crop, and the headstock isn’t going to crack anytime soon imo. Headland management is simple (much simpler than the Lely), just needing one lever slid over to turn all 4 wheels at once.

we have lely 770 (6 rotor) and 1020 (8 rotor) tedders they do a good job in our heavy haylage and silage crops. Drive slower with good rotor speed when grass is damp to get the lumps teased out, often go twice over headlands (start and finish) to even out drying. as the crop dries you can "flatten" the rotors by lengthening top link on 770 and slowing rotor speed and upping forward speed each time so the crop is not thrown so far behind and the flatter rotors sweep the ground better (might need to alter the wheels at the same time as lenghtening top link). We rake with krone 900 two rotor, it has survived me "touching" the odd electric pole and silage bale once or twice. Gas bottles, heat and carefull straightening has sorted those incidents out without new rotor arms!! Have had the rake since 2007, tedders since 2006 and 2009, broken few tines on tedders but not many. Carefull operator will likely get on with any machine but some are better built and just need tweaking to get a good job

I'm deciding to buy a new rotary tedder. I am deciding betwen: krone vendro 900 or kuhn gf8703. which is better and why ? Now i have kuhn gf 6401. Krone is cheaper and has a longer warranty, but constructio-wise it seems weaker in some points than kuhn. Any advice please?

Forget the krone, iv done plenty with a 6 rotor and its a ball o dung compared to our lely. Get a lely which is now a massey would be my advice

Personally I wouldn't touch the krone tedder as I've never managed to get one to do a decent job, have used a new Kuhn this year and was impressed but still regard the Lely to do a better job so for me I think I'd go for either the Malone, Lely or Kuhn depending who your dealer is and how close the prices are.

For the rake, the only reason for having a single star to me would be for turning rows of straw, and out of the 2 stars I've never used a KV, claas always seem to be ok and just work but, every krone rake I've used I have been able to get to do a superior job in all conditions, so krone rake would be my choice
Agree 100% as regards the krone tedder, it's when it breaks down and one uses another brand one realises just how bad a job they do... Really rated the Kverneland Taarup tedders, and of course the Malone...

malone is not visible in our areas and does not have a dealer .. I live near the S I P factory but I am not interested in their machine because of bad experiences in the past. although the new sip products are better than in the past.. Kuhn has the largest weight of all 1450 kg and is also expensive. However, the old kuhn has served me well, I would only use it for making silage and not for hay...

I’d have another look at SIP. They aren’t remotely the same machines they used to be.

There is a comforting amount of engineering in my SIP, the Grassmen did a factory tour on youtube which helped convince me that they are OK, we also have a local dealer.

Not much to go wrong with any tedder, so why would it break down?

They all need correctly set rotor speed, rotor angle, and forward speed to suit the crop. Seen plenty horrific lumps and rows made by Kuhn, KV, Krone, pottinger etc etc when the operator is nowt more than a sweaty seat jockey 🙄

I've a new type 8 rotor krone 900 Vendro that replaced a Claas 770 last summer. Krone far easier to set up and adjust, be it for tedding out fresh cut or turning near hay. Tines are now unequal length so both the same height off thy ground. Bloody simple and effective, don't understand why nobody else makes them like that! It's a heavy machine, but with the close coupled headstock and excellent damping system, a wee 100hp handles it fine even on my hills

Kuhn is heavier and needs a bigger tractor. Price tag was also heavier! Pottinger rated by a few with them round here, but there isn't a local dealer pushing them. Claas seem to have stopped improving their machines? Grass still wraps around the rotor tops, wheels are still a bugger to adjust, and straight tines keep leaving a wee bit between the rotors unless you set it up in "power harrowing" fashion
