I’ve just brought 4 Hereford cross dairy cow heifers to breed from. There about 12 months old on good hay how much meal should I be feeding? And what protein? All help appreciated.

We give 5lb barley and a scoop of nuts between 2. Every day of the year from when their weaned. Keeps them quietish and fills them out, you could up it if you want them that amount each no problem and they’d grow like stink!

Thank you for that, I’ve put them on 1 scoop of 14% stock nuts each at the moment, don’t want them getting fat but likewise want them big enough to get in calf around January.

Needs to be a higher protein feed otherwise they will get fat rather than growing in my opinion better with an 18% growing nut

Aiming to calf in October
I would be looking for a minimum bulling weight of 400kgs, and feed accordingly. But beware of getting that weight with too much fat. As above sufficient protein to grow frame is important, aim for minimum 16% I would say. How much will depend on current weights.

14% is a finishing ration and is far too low for growing Herefords imo, you'll just end up with little butter balls! I would go to 18%, even good hay is low protein so you need the extra in the concentrate. Quantity wise a couple of kilos each per day should do.
