Hoeing Cereals

Good point , although the tines would be single row, like the terra blade. Wish you success with you're project, do you think the tines would penetrate better being pushed rather than pulled, or no difference
We will set it better in the field. We were using an old triple k frame so extended it as it was. We have several rear mounted hoes but the problem is they block up so we are running wide spaced times in front in order to stop that.

We are just knocking this up in the workshop to go on the front linkage. Whilst not for corn yet the idea is similar. I think if it were on a front loader it would be hard to steer as the distance from the front wheels would mean ever little tweak of the steering wheels will be magnified.View attachment 1034615View attachment 1034614
Looks good but I think for land that grows black grass it would be just the frame after about 50yds with those tines.

We run a Garford Hoe here behind a mzuri drill we have used it behind our rapid, but that was a bit of a mission. We have had mixed experiences from thinking it's the best thing since sliced bread to wanting to scrap it!

We are certainly getting the hang of it now though. RTK is a must, the wide spacing of the mzuri has really made a big difference the vaddy was very hot and miss.

Certainly struggling with blackgrass here, spring cropping, grass leys, cover crops, grazing with sheep, strip tillage
hitting it from all angles.

Current thinking is 2 passes, an early pass at 5- 10cm plant height and then a really late pass, never worry to much about pushing down crops with wheels as it always springs back.

I have no experience of rtk but if it was on a tractor, would it just be a case of drilling with rtk and then when it came to hoeing just doing an AB line between the rows with a bog standard hoe. What is the point of the actual hoe being lazer guided.

Evening all. I thought i would see how any you got on this year hoeing?

First-year of DD with an Avatar on 25cm row spacing. DD into OSR, Linseed, and Bean stubble which has all come up a treat. I lightly tickled my second wheat ground with a carrier, then rolled before drilled with the Avaatar.

Like most, I have my problem areas for BG and RG. One of the many reasons for moving to DD. However, i know DD isn't a silver bullet for grassweed control having tried various plots with DD drills over the past couple of years. I have found rotation, livestock, delayed drilling, rouging and herbicides all play there part.

Looking at some of my 1st wheats today DD into OSR stubble and they look a picture. However, in places where i would expect it (headlands) i can clearly see RG and BG between the rows. No hiding on 25cm row spacing. It's not all over just in patches. DD and the mulch between the rows have definiatly made a difference given the wheat was drilled around the 20th September. If I had moved it all and drilled with a vaddy on the same date I think it would be a lot worse.

Now I'm on 25cm row spacing Is the answer a hoe?.

Photo to give a example of row spacing. This DD wheat into linseed stubble, drilled on 4th October.

I am pleased enough with inter row hoeing after 2 years of assessing the technique with a 6m Claydon terrablade that I have ordered a 12m Horsch camera guided hoe to roll it out wholesale.

That sounds good. I'm really interested to give it a go. I have spoke to the Claydon rep to get a demo next year.

What's your soil type majority? I have very varied soils from chalk to clay and plenty of stones in places. Are you still planning on using a full pre-m stack?

It’s hanslope clay. Yes still use a proper pre em. I don’t know where this will all lead. Currently viewing it as like an extra herbicide.

we did 200 acres with a Garford Robocrop. I tweeted at the time that i wondered if i was killing or saving the crop as your not sure if youre damaging too many plants with either the blades or the wheels. Well come harvest i was very pleasantly surprised and would say it slashed the BG in a VERY dirty field by 90%. Second wheat 7t/ha whereas would have expected 5t/ha if id left the BG. Wheeling damage and plant damage completely invisible at harvest. Will definitely do more next year, as its given me the flexibility to now drill 2 weeks earlier. given todays rain, im somewhat glad of that.

Yes this is a very good point. I’m hoping to get more flexibility with being able to drill winter crops earlier and be less reliant on spring crops which I want to get from 40% of our cropping down to 25% because they aren’t consistent enough.
