Holstein Bulls

Thought I'd put this out there.

Got four Sassafras daughters milking now; strong, compact cattle with plenty of strength. Not the highest yielders but fantastic fats and good protein compared to others.

Smaller too, so should be more feed-efficient.

I completely agree and my bet is that she was flushed which produced rocky, and then never got in calf afterwards which wouldn't be her fault - however

His gdam didn't complete her first lactation
His ggdam didn't complete any lactations
His gggdam did 2 lactations
His ggggdam did 2 lactations
His gggggdam did 4 lactations
His ggggggdam did 1 lactation
His gggggggdam did 1 lactation
His ggggggggdam did 2 lactations - as a side note, her other daughter was the dam of bull Mr Sam who I believe was fairly popular and it turned out his daughters weren't particularly fertile from memory?
but how much milk did they produce, in each of those lactations ?

we have a local ped herd, his argument is his cows, give as much milk, in two lactations, as a fr type does in four.

but he goes quiet, when you mention lactations 5/6 and 7, that our hol/fr types can do.

it really boils down to what floats your boat, whether his ped sales make up for some of the difference 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ or he just loves high yields.

but cost wise, 2 lac average, means x2 the y/stock, compared to 4 lac average.

we are currently av 5.5 lacs, but there will be hfrs that don't make their second, and others go on out, for other reasons, l was always told, the longer the cow stays, the bigger her profit. And we have some 8/9/10 calvers about.

one thing we haven't culled any for, for years, is temperament, 40 yrs ago, we would send some on for wildness, but they had to be bad. Somerset cattle breeders, pushed a bull hard, Horwood Emperor 25th, his hfrs could be pure evil, used to boast at skittles, 'who had the worst ones'. One of the big plusses with hols, quiet.

Terrible rumps and shot teats couldn’t bring myself to order High View
Now, i know you all think that classifying is a waste of time however, why are all his granddams classified really nicely and yet his dam hasn't been at all?
I reckon she could be pretty ugly on the rump and udder hence why his rump score is awful

Good fertility
Good milk
Good fat

Type linear is nice, breeds smaller compact cows, teats placement is all OK, longer teats
