He is now in his late 80's , quite a character, John George, lives in Milton, nr Dunedin ,he's last job before late retiring was on the loader for an ariel fertiliser/ lime spreading contracter. My plan is to get out of keeping animals (for a while anyway) and have some free time, and maybe do more on the engineering ,parts supplying and reparing side, which to be honnest I do have more intrest in.My flegling parts supply buisness has already had a bit of a set back, two local dealers put pressure on the suppliers to dump me, neither were blue tractor dealers. But its not in my nature or the breeding of my fore fathers to give in to anything or anyone. So I'm lòoking now for an agent to help me on a % age mark up so I can continue to serve my few customers with good value and advice.

Now it's coming to an end,I started thinking ,it would be good to go for ground drive for maybe next year. My main tractor,Mf 6475 can be retro fitted with the ground drive pto gubbins, ,so I guess its just a matter of fitting a 10 stud lorry drive axle under the spreader , doing a lot of maths as to the reduction needed, to match the tractor and spreader drive shaft speeds. Either find a gearbox with the correct ratios, or using shafts with sprockets and chains, even duplex or triplex? Should the tractor be equal or have a %age lead over the spreader? Some of you guys here will know I'm sure, john.

The tractor needs to be equal with the spreader. You don't want the spreader pushing the tractor, obviously, but equally if you get in a spot of bother on a bank and need to reverse, you don't want anything out of sync!!

We had a Case 1056 XL with Land Drive spreader, the first outfit I drove seriously. It was superb. Dad drove MF 165, 188 and 290 tractors with similar spreaders previous to that Case. They were great bits of kit.

Thanks Pete, its a subject ive no knowledge on, did the old Land Drive spreaders have a specific lorry axle, something quite rare? I would guess that an axle with the biggest possible reduction ratio would be best ,to reduce the tourqe loading on the driveline?

Did you consider a hydraulic motor on the live axle pinion?
Easy to control speed with oil flow, but may not be suitable for your application.

I would have thought a 4 wheeler axle and a 12 speed gearbox would give you all that you could need. Make an in cab selector, very simple.
Who am I kidding?

I still have the old spreader. I'm reasonably sure the axle is a Leyland commercial and there are two Bedford transfer boxes underneath it to get the right ratios for the 1056.

Dad bought the tractor in June 1991. A friend called him from the Royal Show to say there was just the spreader he needed on a stand. John Mowbray of Land Drive was there with two spreaders. This one was, if I recall correctly, made for an MF 3080 but the order was cancelled. Dad saw it and told John the tractor model. He came home and that evening we worked out the wheel to pto shaft ratio and next day John worked out what he had to do. Then Dad threw a spanner in the works by saying if things had to be changed was there any chance of fitting bigger wheels on the spreader- the old flotation wheels from the MF 290. John worked out that if he fitted two Bedford transfer boxes it would be perfect. It was delivered a week or two later all ready to go, a totally unique build complete with Cole telescopic boom and clamshell bucket.

At the National Lime Spreading Demonstration in Yorkshire the next spring, (wettest day ever known to man, bloody awful) everyone agreed it was the best machine on the field. It was superb to use.

All my spreaders run between 3 & 5% slower so as not to Jack knife when turning
John Mowbray set mind up and explained that the front axle on a 4 wheel drive tractor is geared to a similar % faster
One of my transpread spreaders has the Leyland axle /Bedford transfer box set up..the other a big schamell axle with an Eaton 2 speed diff grafted in with the unrequired ratio machined off to give an electrical operated neutral
Hope that helps

Any pictures pete sounds an interesting piece of kit

Thanks Tim, only problem is , now thinking about ground drive, and maybe Gps variable rate! That is one subject I will need your expertise Tim. Often think about our discussion ,how much easier life would be if we were both simple and brainless:scratchhead:

With all the GPS technology about nowadays we need an affordable land drive set up that gets its speed signal from the tractor, this could be used for rate spreading also.
