I have used 6 inch round posts and buried a pipe they fit into so they can be lifted out and driven or mown over easily.

Think the calor gas bottle job would make nice gate post ,would have make the a bit longer!

Driving in Ireland I noticed what appeared to be steel spikes about a foot long and 50mm diameter sticking up at lay-bys to keep cars off the verges. Certainly kept me off! Then I had a closer look. They were rubber! I thought that was pretty good. Effective without being dangerous as in an emergency they could be driven over. But I haven't a clue where you'd get some from!

Be careful with concrete bollards that could fall over. A small child was killed by one at the Highland Show ground a couple of years ago.
