Homework pointers..

Hi all,

I have a piece of work to do for my college course, establishing a crop in a chosen field.

Not looking for the answer but just need a few pointers as its the weekend and can't contact my tutor.

Basically, i'm establishing Winter OSR. I have my P + K status, mod - high , mod - low. Have calculated my offtakes and checked the NVZ's

I understand the NPK 20:10:10 are % of whats in a 600kg bag. For example iv recommended YaraMila ACTYVAS 16:15:15 + 6.5% SO3 sown @187.5kg/ha will give a rate of N=30kg/ha P=28kg/ha K=28kg/ha + 12kg/ha SO3

But for my spring applications im really stuck. My autumn rates leave me with a shortfall in the PK+SO3 levels and I have no idea how to work out what blend I should be spreading. My calculations tell me I should be splitting 200kg/ha of N over the spring, 34kg/ha of P, 17kg/ha K and 63kg/ha SO3 to make up for the shortfall?

Never had anything like this to do before so its all new to me.

Maybe someone will understand what im trying to do..o_O:scratchhead:

Thanks

@bobalobmitchell you could give it a first dose of NPK early in spring. Say 200kg/ha of you 16.15.15 which will give you another 30kg P and 30 K (excess will be available to next crop) plus 13kg sulphur and 32kg of N to get the crop growing in early spring.

Apply the rest of the N as AN plus sulphur or Urea plus Sulphur as required.

You could have used 10-26-26 in Autumn @ 300kg/ha which would cover your P and K in the Autumn.

Loads of ways to do it. Just get the numbers as near as practical. You wont get them exact unless you use straights.

Best off to apply Diammonium phosphate in the autumn, about 150 kg/ha to give 27 kg N/ha and 69 kg P/ha.
Leave K + S until the spring as they are soluble and will leach.

Shouldn't you be out partying on a Saturday night?

To keep it simple (and cheaper probably) use TSP and MOP for P and K in early spring and N with some S in split into 2 applications

Use TSP and MOP (or 0.24.24 or 0.20.30 or similar) in the autumn at rates to suit your indicies and then apply N and S in spring as required.

Keep it simple.

It adds to the spring workload which is plenty enough anyway. Not much of a problem for TSP unless you get run off but the potash will leach.

Just popping in to say thanks for all the replies! They really helped with the fertilizer section. Found it quite difficult trying to work out the timings, especially with it being an imaginary crop. I made sure to mention this thread in my references ;)

Cheers.
