There is a lkot of variable factor's, have you just purchased this mower, have you had it from new and this season is the first time you have smelt petrol fumes, where is fuel tank front or rear, have you checked fuel lines after starting it for a few minutes then check for leakage, is you oil level going up or do's oil smell of petrol if so try fitting a fuel line tap and turning it off every time you stop engine and change oil if contaminated, can you smell fumes before starting engine or is it noticeable after filling tank,if so check tank for possible leak, do you notice fumes when engine running ,check exhaust system for rust and perforations....
Check fuel pipe all the way from tank,to carb, had one in other day from customer not starting and smelling of petrol, turns out fuel pipe was rotton and wet with petrol but not leaking onto floor but sucking air so it wouldn't start, new fuel pipe cured it. Old pipe was original from new but poor quality.
