When you push the button you get a clicking noise by the battery end, i have changed the starter relay and charged up the battery and cleaned terminals, but still the same, the starter its self does not seem to be trying at all, the bike starts fine on the pull. Is there something i have missed. Appreciate any help on this before i loose the plot.

It's the starter motor magnets bonding glue that has given way and the magnets have broken
which in turn locks up the starter armature Io have 2 New starter motors put into a 2008 420 1 origional and one Chinese and it's gone again there a rubbish item in my opinion

If any one has any idea where to source a good replacement brand other than the original Mitsuba SM18 Model please let us know I'm stuck for one as mine is an American model 420 which dosent have the pull start on it

Strange I have over 2 thousand hours put on mine from new and the only problems I have had is that bloody back axle eating the splines in those hubs

chances of it being the brushes are slim i though it was them when my 420 did that, was the magnets in the starter!
new starter from honda is only 80 odd quid not worth fecking about with(y)

I would jump the starter off another battery.
Connect negative of donor battery to negative on quad battery or clean steel work / engine casing.
Connect positive jump lead to donor battery and hold a long screwdriver on the starter motor terminal (there's only one on it).
Then strike the other end of the positive jump lead off the screwdriver, engine should spin?

If it doesn't check all jump lead connections.
If still nothing, crank the engine a little by using the kick start or throw it in gear and rock the quad forward. What your trying to do is, release the pressure in the engine so the starter will be fit to crank the engine over? As @Scholsey has already explained.

If it starts the automatic decompressor in the engine needs looking at.
Do it a few times to double check, but hopefully just starter brushes.
E-Bay have them ...........

When you take it off if you can't turn the gear with your hand freely it's the magnets that have broken it's easy to open up starter just remove the 2 bolts then the end cap and then pull out the armature you will then see whether the magnets have broken or not they can't be replaced I did remove the broken bits on the first one of mine that failed and put it back together. it worked for a few weeks but failed again then ( might get you going if your stuck ) just to be clear this is on a 420 not an older bike they have different starter motors

I had a similar problem with my 350 so finally gave up and took it into the local dealers. They diagnosed a bad battery, replaced that and it has not looked back. Sometimes we overlook the simple things. Hondas do seem to like a nice lively battery. Worth a try?

Just wondering how did you get on with the starter motor after did you have to get a new one or what ( how much and where from ) Cheers
Got busy with harvest and not looked at it yet, starts easy on the pull so not a major problem, was going to get some brushes for the starter motor from ebay and have a look on a wet day.(y)
