Horse fly traps

We have a new neighbour who lives in a wooded area near a stream. They are really struggling with horse fly bites. They do seem worse this year. I was mowing in the field next to theirs and the cab windows had loads of them. (Isn't air con wonderful! )
Anyway I wondered if horse fly traps actually work. It's basically a black football that warms up in the sun and the heat attracts the horse fly that then gets trapped.
Anyone any experience to share please?

That’s a question I was thinking of posting: they’ve been b******s here today.

how many do you need though? Say you have a 10 acre field - surely you need them at distances? If the field is square then you could end up with one in the middle. Interesting. For us though our fields are interesting shapes and use small sections within a very large field. The horseflies seem to live in the long grass everywhere.

Ive got the red top bags around the house but still get enormous amounts of flies in the house.

Good, but again youd need to cart that around and at what distances? Shame you have to clean it out everyday though.

Proof of the pudding is in the eating.

I found bait in a rat trap didn't work .. so I didn't use bait .. put the traps on the runs instead. If your unsure of the run then put down some lime.

You have to get inside your prey .. think like the prey .. be the prey. :)

Put it all together and it's huge! 3 horseflies in it already so looking promising. I've positioned it right by a pond where I think they will be breeding
