Thriving Horticulture and Floriculture Markets in Vietnam

With a population of some 95 million people, Vietnam is a huge emerging market for the horticulture and floriculture industry. The country‘s exports of fruits & vegetables have witnessed a strong growth in the past years, with an average rate of 26.5 per cent a year, from $439 million in 2009 to some $2.2 billion in 2016.

Remarkably, Vietnam increased its fruit and vegetable exports by 10.8% on-year, setting a new record in 2018, with the figure surpassing the nation’s export turnover of crude oil. As latest updates, the export value during the first 6 months of 2019 hit $2.06 billion, up 3.9 percent year-on-year, stated the Agro Processing and Market Development Authority under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. A further growth is expected due to strong exports and a strong domestic demand. The vegetable and fruit sector aims to gross nearly $4.2 billion in export turnover in 2019 and the market is focusing on sustainability.

The floriculture sector, on the other hand, is proving its significant growth potential to become a leading exporter of floriculture products according to experts in the agricultural industry. In March 2018, the Vietnam floriculture industry has offered many opportunities for growers and suppliers as the government has provided the package of USD 4.40 billion for developing hi-tech agriculture. The country’s cut flower exports are projected to register a CAGR of 7.8% during 2018 - 2023, climbing from $44.392 thousand in 2017 to an expected $69.373 thousand by 2023.

In addition to the prospective highlights that can be seen in the Vietnamese market as mentioned, a good news for the horticulture and floriculture itself and as the whole economy is that Vietnam and the European Union signed a free trade agreement on 30 June, a first-of-its-kind trade deal that offers great opportunities to further boost trade between the EU and Vietnam. Once the deal takes effect, the EU will lift 85% of its tariffs on Vietnamese goods, gradually cutting the rest over the following seven years. For Vietnam, the tariff elimination will benefit key export industries, including agriculture products.

Undoubtedly, the positive growth prospects has been making Vietnam’s market an ideal destination for foreign investments. A large number of suppliers are eyeing and looking for opportunities in the growing horticulture and floriculture sector in Vietnam. Due to recognizing the strong demand for direct access this promising market, HortEx Vietnam will serve as a comprehensive platform with exclusive opportunities for key players to get insights on Vietnam’s horticulture and floriculture market and expand their products to the global market in one marketplace.
