Hotmail vs. Outlook

Just had an email from Microsoft asking if i wanted to upgrade from Hotmail to Outlook (They'll be doing this automatically to all Hotmail accounts over the next few weeks)

But, they say it has more features, but when reading then, it's nothing more than i could do with Hotmail.

I'm assuming that Microsoft don't want to run 2 email providers, preffering to run and develop 1, or have i missed something?

I've always used outlook as a standalone email client as it comes with MS Office, outlook 2013 is pretty smart bit of kit. I did upgrade the wife's web based hotmail to outlook but she rarely uses it, it did look sleek. Her emails arrive in outlook 2013 and I say "you have an email from ..........." and "I'll read that" or "delete"! Biggest problem at the moment is getting my new tablet off her!!! Grrrrr

But outlook in "office suit" is very expensive to buy, so much so the basic Office does not include it. So are they giving it away now? its far better than hotmail, a totally professional system that does more than you will ever discover.

Update, just had a Google, its outlook.com, not the same thing at all.. done to compete with gmail.

Not giving it away, I've used MS Office from day one and upgrade costs although on the high side are bearable as I use the program to intergrate with my accounts package and Adobe X PDF program, also MS Publisher can create some decent literature. You probably know that office is subsidised for students, so it may pay to find a student! I use a gmail account for my business email.
