How’s your supermarket

If its the only way for our corner of western society to reconnect with food production then so be it. Easy access to food (and water) is the one thing that allows everyone in this country to do all the other benign activities they fill their lives with. Civilisation exists because of farmers, full stop. We aren't asking for a rich wage or celebrity status, just that we're acknowledged as a necessity and part of the fabric of society, instead of being vilified on a daily basis.
Why they have been paying us for years (SFP, BFI etc) . What is happening now is the best chance ever for farmers to get away from Government intervention. Prices are on the up and it’s time to tell the Government to stuff their money and trees and public access etc but to do that we’ve got to have the courage to tell them to stuff their money too. However it takes courage as a small UK farmer what we were getting from the Government was nice but wasn’t that much so I can. I farm because it’s a business and if I can’t make money I will have to do something else I don’t need anyones love or respect just their money.

Was a head guy from ASDA on a BBC program yesterday being interviewed on rising food prices.

To my amazement he didn't mention farmers once!🤦‍♂️🤣

The level of disconnection between farming and food amazes me.

Be interesting how long asdas drop and lock on food prices lasts!

Our local supermarket no bananas or lemons Saturday afternoon. Didn't notice anything else missing. Was a bit of a dash.

I have found since covid really, the choice of some processed foodstuffs has reduced. Personally I think that's a good thing. Do we need 70 different packets of biscuits? Red sauce, brown sauce, and a brown sauce with a friuty flavour(surely that's what tomato is?🙄🙄)all shipped in from abroad!!

Have found recently that butter is in short supply. Even proper butter with no veg oils added☹☹

Always have to remember when watching these slippery fekkers that they always want to appear to be the shoppers‘ best friend. Then they’ll happily put prices up once the camera’s gone and no one’s watching.

Besides the obvious looming shortages due to Ukraine and the worlds response you should also be aware that Shanghai is under full lockdown due to covid.
You might not think that can have any effect on food supply but how much packaging comes via that port? How many spare parts for every machine you can think of from field to fork?
We are all in for a rough ride imo.

I recent few weeks we have noticed that tomatoes and cooking oil have completely run out.
Yes they are back now, but choice is very limited.
Saturday saw a big shortage of potatoes with very limited choice as to what was available.
Also the type of salad leaves was very limited.

Prices have definitely risen and continue to do so.

I've being telling people for a little while that the effects of covid and ukraine won't really come to fruition until later in the year. Sadly (or not) for this Government it will be around the same time that household energy demand goes up due to colder temps and people staying indoors. Winter of discontent here we come. Be very surprised if boris and chums are in charge by this time next year.

Ther is no general election till 2024
if Boris can survive the last few months the change won’t happen till after the election
if labour continue to keep slipping up like this week apathy will be the only winner

He's got an 80 seat majority. Full term guaranteed.

The realisation of people and government that you throw domestic production under the bus at your own peril. Food shortages are something that NZ and potentially Australia will never experience given the high levels of food production in relation to population size. The fact that Whitehall seems intent on implementing policies which aim to import most of our food from countries most exposed to climate change, is both alarming and idiotic.
The NZ population does in general have a much greater appreciation of seasonality where fresh food is concerned.
For example the anticipation of the first arrivals of Golden Queen Peaches and Central Otago Chelan Cherries each year seems to be somewhat of a national phenomenon.

Let them eat wallpaper.

Soz, couldn’t resist.

On the plus side, disappearance of industrial seed oils is a good thing.
In Sainsburys this morning no shortage of butter or lard, who cares about vegetable oil.

Salad leaves Huh! Anyone can grow enough salad leaves in an old basin from now on till end of summer

After that folk should be eating cock-a-leekie soup
and mince and tatties
And flapjacks

all made up of ingredients grown on this island

edit: and that includes copse's beer

My wife hasn't been into a supermarket since the onset of Covid preferring, instead,to ordering a home delivery online. She has just done a week's babysitting for our daughter in London and decided to call in at the local supermarket on the way home to top up with a few essentials. She was horrified to what she saw.She claimed the last bottle of cooking oil on the shelf, there was no wholemeal bread and the choice of veg was very limited and of poor quality.
She was quite shocked.
