My land is cropped to within about a foot of the metalled road. Any legalness saying I cant plant a hedge right up to the edge as long as it is my land and not on the map of the council's maintained / designated highway?

Think its why when the verges are mowed ,they only cut one width of the head and if you have seen the size of the head on flail they use round here ,its only a mtr wide so they can hop on with it as he gets paid by the mile

Each road has different awarded widths, you may own it but cannot do anything with it... best to ask, a householder up the road from me had to move his new wall back 4' due to this.

As Lincsman says , you cannot obstruct the highway within the designted width.
The limit to the highway is one half the designated width from the centre of the highway.
The council highways should be able to tell you the designated width.

Our council has ruled very recently that the hedge should be at least 4 feet from the tarmac.

IMHO in many situations such as inside curves it should be further away - and there is nothing more sad than a one-sided hedge where it has been flailed to the stub on the roadside to give extra room.

Maybe interpretation is down to individual councils, they have also stated that any 'edge marking stones' should be no nearer than 30 inches from the black.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
