One has to qualify that as short term or long term. What is a definition of sustainable ?
To my mind, that is just keeping or sustaining things as they are ?
Which ultimately, is still no different from treading water . . .?
Personally, I believe modern industrial chemical reductionist high input prescription agriculture has already been caught in a rip & being dragged out to deep water & eventual drowning - we just aren't aware of it yet . . .

Surely the definition of long term sustainability is that you could continue to follow your methods indefinitely without the system collapsing (ecological, financial, social). On that basis very few of us are farming sustainably I suspect.
Fendt, Bateman sprayer, Stewart trailers, Claas Lexion, Range rover.
yes but if you have no one coming after you there is no point hanging in till the grim death.Increasing the net worth of the farm over your lifetime and not selling the family silver.
apparently everything we know it is ultimately not sustainable in the very long term so best not lose to much sleep over itI don't believe current agricultural systems of any type are ultimately sustainable in the long term . . .
Remember the gaffa tape salesman, 'in the end everything is temporary, so you may as well use gaffa tape anyway'apparently everything we know it is ultimately not sustainable in the very long term so best not lose to much sleep over it
reckon you need to broaden your acquaintance base cos most must be miserable buggers( ho ho )Most people I know fall into two categories
Financially rich but time poor
Financially poor but time rich
Very few seem to be able to find balance between those points
yes but if you have no one coming after you there is no point hanging in till the grim death.
Making a profitLeaving soil in better condition than you found it and surviving your working life!
Are you sure profits have nothing to do with success? I agree being happy whilst farming is important, but I for one am generally happier when making a profit than I am when making a loss and I have done both.Being happy whilst you farm and happy when you finish, profit/assets have nothing to do with success.

This is 100% the correct answer, very few truly ever achieve this.Contentment
unfortunately not financially rich or time rich but family and friend richYou are both time and financially rich then ?
I do know a few that fit in that category but it’s usualy via inheritance which makes them very uninteresting, boring and unimaginative people
