How late can I apply N to winter wheat?

The last couple of days rain has got me thinking of trying to get some extra yield out of my winter wheat. I am not aiming for milling wheat. My usual yield is about 6,5 tonnes and so far I have added 130 kg of N, this is my ordinary total N.

This year looks very promising...after a small dry spell it started raining a couple of days ago and it has got me thinking of adding a bit more N and try to push the yield a bit higher. The problem is that its a bit late in the growing season... The wheat crop is now in DC 65. If I put on an extra 30 kg of N, will my yield go up or is it too late? Maybe I just up the protein?

40kgs / ha going on here this week probably - normal enough practice on milling wheat

not sure you will change yield much with application now, more about quality

Very unlikely that any applied N now will affect yield.

Thanks for your answers guys! I added 30 kg N today, it will probably not affect the yield by much, but it feels better to give the crop a chance. And I will probably get most of my money back by increasing protein although its not milling wheat.

Are you adding any water @Clive ?

depends on weather, if its stays dull then no just 200L straight on, if its bright and sunny I will add some water and it will be done at night

most important to avoid scorch is nozzel choice - keep to 2bar max pressure with a flat fan (we will use 04 brown110ff)

I have various nozzle options would you avoid an AI nozzle?
I was wondering about GuardianAir 04's all facing forward to get more onto the leafs?
Or I could put some 04ff in an angled cap or just have them pointing straight down?

I have used AI in the past without problems, not sure you need to worry about angles etc - the ears of a thick wheat crop are hard to miss

main thing is keeping pressures sensible
