i think the whole non drip thing is a gimmic , uncle of ours built a workshop and bought the best money could buy ( hes not a farmer obviously) and even on a moderatley cold morning its wet , we have one house in particular thats close to 60 years now and actualy has wooden rafters and its still "useable"

did you see the picture a few years ago with a chap repairing a gable end of a shed out of a bucket and someone had taken photo sent it to HSE it was in the farmers weekly ,that building was 45ft span and on all 203x133 posts and rafters erected at Alton Hampshire in 1989 its stood the test of time ,thats the second time the gable has been repaired ,we sheeted the gable with big 6 and the next day I drove through with sanderson forklift and took it out with the the top of the mast
Was old steel not stronger though? I'm not arguing I'm quite interested really

no not really if remember correct we used to buy grade 43a and grade 50b was available in some sizes but cost prohibitive as it was cheaper to go up a size on the std grade but then it was replaced with grade s235 and s355 but most now supplied in the high grade if i remember correct but don't quote me on that ,i think the confusion comes in when people say old steel was stronger in the fact if you compared a 8x4 rsj with a 8x4 ub it would be stronger because of the tampered flanges and the bigger root

heres the way i did it , set the plywood pads either end in sand to get the level then dropped the 4 x 2 on top and filled with concrete

push them in the wet concrete loads quicker use a plumb bob and small crocodile clips on lines

That's how they teach you to do it at college. College tutor looked at me like I was stupid when I said we just shove them in the wet concrete

Means nothing, was when I had big ambitions of making some money been a site manager. Now I'm just a labourer doing the sh!t jobs nobody else will do even though I pay them

no they are ok and the holes work, use same plate from 178x102 upto 305x165 then make longer to suit bigger posts, grain stores ,silage clamps sheds over 80ft span m24 x 450 bolts 8.8 on 300x200 bolt dimensions 30mm holes
