How much do agricultural machinery sales people get paid

A tip for aspiring sales reps. Do not take on the burden of service and repair on your shoulders. Any customer that rings in any mood about a breakdown, be sympathetic but cut it short and refer them to your service department. Ditto with accounts. Don’t get involved with collecting overdue debts. This keeps any animosity well away from your relationship with your customer. These are not your jobs unless you are paid a handsome salary rather than a commission.

Not sure I agree with you there. If you sold it YOU are responsible for collecting the account. First thing I was told on the first day I started work with a merchant from college was that “nothing is sold until it’s paid for”

Out of order mate 👎👎👎👎
Don’t worry. I don’t! I actually doubled the turnover of Sulky in uk in my 4 years there. I then moved to another MD position where I lead the team and again doubled the amount of machines retail sold . I then chose to focus on my family whom I’d neglected for the past 7 years. I’m now a garden hand (owner of my own business already making good profit after only staring 4 months ago. Let’s not get too worked up about Speestar. I’m not!

That’s true but a professional dealer should have an accounts department. I mentioned Riverlea previously, which in it peak days before Claas forced them to dump other brands and before Rogers retired, they employed people specifically to collect any accounts overdue by a day. In any case, no wholegoods came off the truck before a cheque was handed over. Same with Willis Bros. Workshop and shop accounts have nothing to do with wholegoods sales staff anyway. Let their own departments or a manager/director chase their debts.
There is really no excuse for not paying today either by cheque, Faster/BACS or credit/debit cards [for smaller amounts].

As an aside, personally I enjoyed collecting money and always got the money amicably. Didn’t get paid to do it though and it wasn’t a regular thing. Rolling bad depts from the workshop was a management issue to sort out and beyond my pay grade.

The further north you go from me the harder the sales but the surer the payment. It does actually vary with area. The Valleys were always a pleasure to work but they worked out how to afford the purchase after the sale. South of me were far bigger spenders and they could always ‘afford’ new but never parts and services or repairs which often had to be rolled over into the next machine’s finance. Obviously there were exceptions of all kinds in all regions but the general difference between areas was pretty obvious.

I’d agree with you Joseph, I’m very good friends with my main dealer salesman, he’s the go to if I have an issue, I’ve bought a lot of tractors from him and he knows if I’m not happy and sorts it out, yes he’s scared to lose sales and keeps me on side but I’d rather that than have to chase things up which really winds me up.

Nice little thread this...

Anyone else wondering if the title should in fact have been " how much do agricultural machinery sales people get paid to move a dead horse?"

I for one would love to know!
I would too, used to pi.. me off when they towed up in CLEAN clothes and new fancy cars, and me in my muck, oil and grease
But to contrast I remember a farm auctioners son arrive in his NEW, JUST RELEASED HOT OF THE PRODUCTION LINE, mustard 2 door coupe MORRIS MARINA:ROFLMAO:

I wonder what it`s like being a 100% complete know-all clever dick and total ar*E all rolled in to one..... Why can`t folk just live and let live on here without being so downright unpleasant?
There`s folk on here that I wouldn`t want to have any dealings with even if I was desperate for cash:mad:

The guy told me there is no way some one can get a bonus like i said , now he can think what he like some people do get lucky & get big bonus it part of life , some people are cut out to work in sales & some are not , that 2 is part of life, in life you make your own way & if you are not happy with what you are doing then do some thing eles , I only tell it like it is , I have met this guy in dealers yard one day a few years ago & you make your own mind up to how you find people

Don't think being a manufacturer area rep is all its made out to be either. M D. might avoid the hassle but reps need to appease angry purchasers when there's a no show or an untimely breakdown as well as appearing on show stands mostly at weekends, pushing angry reps to sell, directors to stock extra etc. along with many miles driving and away from the family. Not for everyone.

How much can an average agricultural machinery sales person expect to earn in a year.
Is there a set minimum wage then commission?
Or is it based just on commission?
Don’t really want people guessing I want to hear from people who actually know because we all know how that will go.
here there was one with a well known brand in tractors and construction 25k plus a small car

10 years ago in the uk I was on 27k so

I do like how everyone is fixated on 200k I did say I thought a good average would probably be around 50k but everyone seems to think I would expect to walk into the job and get 200k😂 when what I meant was that there shouldn’t be any reason an exceptional salesperson who has put the years in and everything else required should be able to reach that. I do understand sometimes you sit back listen think twice and then reply.
Thanks for your advice

Thanks for the advice yes I’ve been in agriculture for over 35 years and have a good understanding of building relationships and sometimes your wasting your time and others you just click and them relationships can last a lifetime if you have mutual trust and respect

Out if interest, how many years are you hoping to put in?
