How to stop hedge theft

Planted a boundary laurel hedge 200 odd plants, right next to a main road .

in the past we have had plants stolen from a poly tunnel which is on the other side of the hedge.
it wouldn't take much for some one to lift the plants from the hedge into back of a pick up and be away within minutes.

any body suggest ways of slowing/deterring someone,

i can only think of tying all the plants together, With wire or something similar,(not easy to cut with a knife).
Did think a fence But the cost of the fence would out weigh replacing the hedge and it would have to come down once the hedge is established.

any ideas welcomed.

Come on nobody is going to nick a laurel hedge as it grows like a weed. Just take cuttings then if any walk you have free replacements. I know what its like to lose plants having a public footpath through my farm and catching people actually digging up plants.

Actually planting something as ugly and out of place as laurel in the countryside ought to be discouraged. Invite people to help themselves and when the eyesores have gone put in a hedge of native species.

The hedge is in the garden not the fields,
Theyre all planted with thorn, beech ,hazel.
and we are on the edge of a big city so not what class as countryside,

I quite like Laurel evergreen ,birds like nesting in there, one mans ugly another mans beautiful ,and all that.
Thanks for the advice though ;)
