HSS drill bit sharpner ?

I am wanting to know if any of the drill bit sharpeners on the market are any good ?

I have a lot, and I mean alot of drills that need sharping, far to many, but would be good if could get some done

Dont suggest doing it by hand, yes I can do it that way, but eyes are not as good as they were,

so is there a simple to use machine on the market, that will do a good job, and quick ?

Drill doctor is ace but have you considered finding a company do it? Bundle them up and send them off might save your sanity.

A drill doctor won’t cut it then as it has a diamond wheel that I don’t think would put it with that kind of (ab)use! I really would be finding a firm to do it for you, maybe an apprentice job to make it cheaper.

For sharpening a lot of drills accurately a Brierley machine is great, last job I worked at had one a brilliant piece of kit, the smaller ones come up occasionally secondhand on eBay, but the cheapest one I've seen was a thousand quid !

I have a cheap Chinese plastic thing sharpens good but only up to 10mm

I had a lot to do and bought a drill doctor. Once I got the hang of it I got everything nice and sharp.
Afterwards I realised I shouldn't of done them all as many were duplicates. Lots of 8mm, 10 mm and 13mm.
Perhaps 10 of each!

I always look about for old drill bits that have been burnt and put to one side. They are much better quality than the newer ones seemingly made of cheese.

Have a Brierley sharpener here, dose up to 32mm.
They were nearly £9,000 new would you believe.
It's an eccellent sharpener that leaves a beautiful finish but there's setting up to it too.

Milkloss isn't far wrong when he's saying to outsource them but when you say nearly 1k of them it's going to cost a fair bit that way too.
So,
What would you be willing to spend on a sharpener? A good one that is and if I'm being honest your not going to get anything of quality in the early hundreds, if you were happy enough to spend round abouts the 1k mark iirc I have info on a crowd I seen at a show that did damn fine looking sharpeners, I'll have a look for you if your interested but like I say, pretty much below 5-6-700 quid is hobby stuff that wouldn't stick that kind of work without costing you a small fortune in "diamond" cutting wheels alone.

I don't think you'll beat drill doctor for the money. Obviously not a commercial factory machine but certainly better than hobby. Ideal for farm workshop

Saw a proper made bit sharpener out on one of the Hutterite colonies workshops in Canada a couple of years ago, just like this

though I don't like how you place the bit in on his. Think it could dig into the wheel. A spring loaded depth stop so you could pull it back and place the bit in, or have it swing round so you're parallel to the wheel might be better.

Something like this would be great. Have it set up in a corner somewhere and sharpen your drills as you need them or hide up and ‘find a job’ when the Mrs is on the warpath!

Nearly got a dill doctor a few times but between random reviews and its all plastic ive resisted thus far......

thanks for the replies,
well not wanting to spend a good few hundred @tinman so thanks for the offer of looking, but no
as been said it might be better to send them off somewhere,
in all honesty I will have about 1k, drill bit I have collected up over the years,
as when blunt I just chuck them in a box, you know the box that will get sorted on a wet day but never does,
however I dont need them all sharpened as there is lots of each size,
maybe if I sorted out say 6 of each main size of the better quality ones, got the likes of a drill doctor to do the smaller ones,
I can do the bigger ones on the bench grinder, its the eyes, I struggle to see the little ones to grind them at right angle,

anyone have a guide on how long a Diamond wheel lasts in a drill doctor,

as @tomlad says, how small do go before buying new

Aways do mine on the grinder, if your eyes arent good why not use glasses? Not sure it bad eye sight thats too blame on smaller sizes and find they break fairly often so hardly worth the bother in sharpenig those, My eldest stepson works for a company now that uses really good bits but when they go blunt they just chuck them out so we now have loads of good ones,I dont even feel sad now when I break one as plenty of spare ones to go at
