Rams don't rust if used regularly and then if they do it's because of lack of use and being left outside.ram covers or guards are mainly to stop damage from material hitting the rods.

Yes u are right, this machine is rarely used and lives outside unfortunately, we usually smear grease on the rods but just wondered if covers would help. Thanks
The best thing of the lot is to unbolt the ram at one end, and retract it. Of course, that will depend on how practical it is on that particular machine, but in most cases it's not a lot of effort on a rarely used machine.
