What about driving in the depths of February, with heater, wipers and lights on, how long will a charge last, get you to the end of the road?!!

Even my, now quite low tech, electric car can switch itself on while plugged in, de ice itself, heat my seat and steering wheen in winter.

It's the Aircon that uses all the juice. Never used the heater - just keep my coat on.

The penny will drop one day that the push for Leccy cars is a drive for profit by the large companies and governments hidden behind a shaky argument for saving the planet.

It doesn't. Yet.

Road pricing by automatic telematics will soon be introduced for all new cars but I doubt that is a vote winner so everyone is keeping quiet about it so far. It will be facilitated by the 5G network, once that covers the whole of the UK more or less. More and more cars are already 'connected' and from, I think, next year, the emergency call facility already fitted to most premium cars, which automatically calls emergency services and gives them the car's exact position in the event of airbag deployment will be compulsory. Once 5G becomes universal then real-time tracking and automatic and even variable, depending on where and the time of day, charging for road distance travelled will become a trivial exercise and the only way to maintain the country's car fleet tax income.

To encourage the pace of change from internal combustion and hybrid engines to fully electric, in future I can foresee the tax on fossil fuels being increased as well as these hybrid cars being subject to the same road pricing as electric cars. So new cars with IC engines will, from some point in the future, almost certainly be hit with a triple-whammy of road tax, fuel tax plus road use pricing, whereas all electric cars will only pay for road use as they use it, straight out of their bank account as they drive or daily.

It's the future... Most trips by car are only a few miles. Dropping the kids at school, a bit of shopping, or even a trip into town you are likely not doing over 50 miles and most electric cars will have a range of a few hundred. If you can plug in while at your destination even better.

Many of my friends that live in cities don't even own cars. Bicycles and trains and planes are all they need. They don't mind paying a 50 quid cab fare now and again, and still pay less than me running a car. Some of those commuting bikes with electric assist are actually worth more than my old car.

Electric cars not much good if you spend all day behind the wheel, but for most people it's just a matter of time before the support infrastructure catches up and diesel/petrol becomes a paupers choice.

5G? When's that gonna be? Huge areas of the country haven't even got 3G yet.

Actually there's very little of the population that don't have 4G or 3G now and its not an issue because the car could store travel data where there's no signal and dump it instantly to the Cloud when it inevitably next gets a signal.
Within five years there will be comprehensive 5G coverage, better than current 4G coverage.
