IH 454 Steering Problem

Hi TFF

I'm after some advice again, hopefully the knowledge here can help. I have a IH 454 with noisy steering. After the tractor has been running for a while and things have warmed up operating the steering creates a squealing / buzzing sound. The noise only happens when the wheels are being turned, once in position it stops. It's It seems less bad when the engine is running above idle speed. the problem has been getting worse over the last year or so.

I've noticed that the steering ram weeps a bit - could that be letting in air?. I changed the hydraulic filter a few years ago - and all looked clean then. I'm thinking a seal / o-ring has gone, but where?

Ideas or suggestions welcome

Thanks

Richard

Change the filter again, wash out the bypass steel gauge filter behind the filter and bowl with petrol etc. you haven't mentioned if the steering is heavy or light ( 1 finger should spin the wheel ) at what revs , hot , cold, etc. The early 454's had their cabs directly attached to chassis and later ones were ISO mounted, what type I have? Leaking ram will not have any association with your fault but no harm in resealing it anyhow....

Thanks for the suggestions. @Grapples I'll try operating the steering whilst the front end is jacked up. @Handar I'll change the filter and clean the steel filter. The steering is as it has always been since I had the tractor - ie light - yes I can spin the wheel with one finger. The problem does not exist when I first start the tractor from cold, but get's progressively worse as it warms up. Once Warm the noise is very bad at idle revs, and improves at working engine speed (PTO) but not completley eliminated. It's a '71 454 with the cab mounted to the chassis.

Thanks

Pardon the obvious but what oil is in the tractor, they like hytran, utto or a 10w/30 stou. If u can turn the steering with one finger when tractor is warm then it's unlikely the priority flow divider is tight , as u mentioned the noise gets louder when tractor warms up ( wrong oil) , seeing its a pre ISO mounted type then it's possible some of the steel pipes are vibrating against the seat support deck area.
