you are lucky someone may have replaced split pins with little r pins when last done, we used r pins from local ford car garage from brake calliper I think makes life easier also had a tool made which was a wedge that caught on the head of pin them hammer it on to shear the split pin and draw out the pin from band, worked most of the time but a hateful job, if you had never done one almost as well taking the lid of easy then.can be done through the side, but need fingers made of steel, I have done a few that way, It's getting the old cotter pins out with your fingers that the problem
