Increasing cheap broadband speed?

Apologies, luddite who watches YouTube here....

I have a Huawei B315s-22 router with a pay as you go sim card in it (🤫) Internet is mediocre but at the right price €20/month, however given my tourist location it struggles with the influx of visitors to the area (or I presume that's why...)

We have a number of devices that can, but don't always, use the WIFI laptops, smartphones, tv, smart plugs, and a doorbell camera.

The router has two connections on the back of it to screw in an external antenna, could I increase the performance of my broadband by doing this and what should I be looking to buy?

Blame this video for me asking

The 400 meg download on the vid seems optimistic, unless you are very lucky

Will all depend how far away & how "visible " is your local mast. Have you tried your router in different places - upstairs bedroom window for example.

Have a wander round with your mobile phone checking the signal strenth. App available for your phone to help

If you find somewhere with better signal then an aerial will help. Up in the telehandler bucket is worth a try :D

Usually aerials come with a relativly short cable so need to have your router within range
Not a good idea to extend the aerial cable. To do with the "gains" from the aerial being cancelled by the cable "losses"

If you have a VPN service, put your entire traffic over VPN, what the internet provider cannot see, they cannot throttle. I have seen the difference even during peak times when normal internet struggle, the VPN traffic seems to be working at a greater speed. Worth a try, even if using a free VPN to see if it might work.
