Don't let the things bite you, I had two on my arm once when soil testing and my forearm swelled up like you wouldn't believe! Second picture looks more like a hover fly which are harmless to humans (voracious predators of other insects from memory).
This is too good an opportunity for sympathy for me to miss, normal horsefly (I think anyway) took a liking to me whilst I was putting fencing up on Sunday and I now have a rather gigantic hand and two fetching red welts on my legs. Who says farming isn't glamorous ??
